Top 10 Outdoor Activities in Amager, Zealand

November 5, 2021 Jeremy Dunfee

Copenhagen was once a Viking fishing settlement, and you can still find traces of the Norse explorers here. Visit reconstructed villages, the remains of a 1,000-year-old castle, and museums dedicated to the notorious raiders. Copenhagen also features a blend of modern architecture and historical artifacts such as the Round Tower observatory – a wonderful example of 17th-century architecture. Art galleries, narrow streets, canals, parks, and Baroque churches round out the city’s cultural attractions.

Amager Strandpark

First of all let me say that this is a place you want to go when it is not freezing and not raining outside. It is the beach and the best part of the whole area is that it is an amazingly relaxed outdoor experience. I will however add just a little word of caution that when we visited it was not overly crowded and I would not know how busy and packed it gets in summer when temperatures reach the 20's. We cycled the area of Amgerstrand, stopping at various points to admire the view, relax and take in the sea, chill and watch the people pass and just spend a relaxed day out. It was a wonderful experience which, for me, allowed my mind to destress and get back into a normal state. I think a walk/ ride along the sea or ocean can always do this. The cycling was easy, the paths are wide enough for walkers, and cyclists and other forms of transport such as roller skaters, etc. Plenty of places to stop and park your bike as well as well spaced watering holes with coffee and goodies. And public toilets as well. If you are coming by car there seemed to be plenty of parking spaces (though I am not sure if it was paid or not) and public transport would be the Amagerstrand Metro stop for the closest. The whole area is well maintained and a fantastic place to spend a half day or a full day with a picnic if the weather is nice. Plenty of places to do this either on the dunes or on the grassy areas. Lots of promenades to walk along as well if you are in the mood for a leisurely stroll. On the whole a wonderful place, which took me by surprise as for some reason I was not expecting it to be that good!

This park, as large as three football stadiums laid end to end, is a treasure trove of nature, for which I visited daily during my five-day stay in Copenhagen. The morning run and park-run activities gave me a bountiful variety of memory. You can either stay at AC Hotel Bella Sky Copenhagen, or (in a more economic fashion) DanHostel, and you'll be able to enjoy the running trails daily like me. I couldn't believe in my eyes when I met a wild deer during my morning run.
