Johannesburg is the place to go to mix big-city culture, shopping, dining and nightlife with outdoor adventures, up-close wildlife encounters and visits to historical sites. Explore caves and nature reserves, or visit a traditional village by day, then enjoy dinner at a hip cafe or five-star restaurant. And if you're a shopper, bring an extra, empty suitcase. With malls, open-air markets and places that blend the two, you'll find plenty of unique souvenirs.

The Marabi Club is the home of superb food and drink accompanied by fine live jazz performances. Visible from the street only by the discreet black canopy above a small metal door in Doornfontein, downtown Johannesburg, the Marabi Club harks back to a vibrant history. In the 1920s and 1930s, the rise of the Doornfontein slumyards, created in the wake of one of the world’s richest gold rushes, gave rise to an urban culture known as ‘marabi’. As the foundation of this new culture, the music was energetic and improvisational. It was a lifestyle prompted by the need to escape the hardships of the working week – defined by illegal shebeens, where the fierce talk of politics was accompanied by the equally disruptive soundtrack of jazz. Today the Marabi Club, tucked into the basement of Hallmark House, evokes this history through the many careful details of the club’s interior. Add excellent food, a long bar, jauntily dressed waitrons offering friendly and slick service, and live jazz.
Pure class from the time we arrived until we left. We were met by one of the 3 very big bouncers who opened the car door for me while my friend, the driver, got the explanation from another staff member that they were offering a valet parking service. The R50 fee was included in our bill. What a pleasant surprise as we walked into the venue. Bigger than expected and lovely decor. We passed the big bar to be met by the friendly hostess and were shown to our table. I had booked for our group of 7 well in advance, so we got a table with a great view of the stage. Our waitron was attentive and offered good service. His tip was a 12% service charge that was added to the bill. The food was excellent - definitely reflecting the Michelin star quality of the chef. Beware that the portions are very small so we had to order more than one dish per person. The jazz itself was good and we were especially impressed by how long the band played. They contributed to the amazing vibe and got everyone onto the dance floor, with even the waitrons joining the patrons on the floor. A beautiful experience overall, in a classy joint that will definitely see us returning. Highly recommended!
