A short Metro ride from Washington DC, Alexandria, Virginia is the perfect escape from the fast-paced capital. First settled in 1695, the city retains its colonial spirit, with cobblestone streets and historic buildings in the Old Town, Gadsby's Tavern, a restaurant serving food since 1770, and centers of learning like the Black History Museum. For a more contemporary side of Alexandria, wander the streets of the stylish Del Ray neighborhood, where local artists operate boutiques and studios.

My wife an I were in the mood for French after a couple of weeks of Asian, so we settled on Bastille...our first visit. It was a last minute reservation and we requested a window seat, unfortunately the only one they had in open was in the cafe section of the restaurant, we took it. The restaurant has a contemporary vibe, but has a varied patronage. Again, restaurant week, so 3 course meal for $35. For Appetizer, we both had BEIGNETS de CREVETTES - savory rock shrimp beignets / guacamole...good enough to wet our appetite. For the main course, I got the TRUITE “GRENOBLOISE”-sautéed rainbow trout filet / brown butter capers / quinoa / carrots / cipolline / spinach...Delish! my new favorite. My wife go the CANARD À L’ORANGE - Moullard duck breast / cognac-orange sauce barley risotto / vegetable du jour. She really enjoyed it, the barley was a pleasant surprise, but her favorite was the Desert (Roulade a la Pistache). I tasted it and it was really good. Going back for Alexandria Restaurant Week... Enough said!

We came to Alexandria to see Raul Malo in the Music Hall area. We got to the Birchmere around 4:45 p.m. and there was already a short line for the box office which opens at 5:00. They assign you a number, which is what you use to enter the Music Hall at 6:00 to get your seating. After getting our number, we got drinks at the bar and then went into the hall at 6:00. The seating was spread out due to Covid; we shared a long table with one other couple. The service was good, but the food was outstanding! We ordered the vegetable stack (portobello, thick slabs of eggplant, roasted red pepper and couscous), pot roast (good portion with potatoes) and THE BEST (restaurant) apple pie EVER, which was served ala mode. Birchmere - don't change a thing about the apple pie! The show started at 7:30 with the warm up act, and the headliner around 8:15. It's an intimate-feeling venue, everyone was friendly and provided good service. Not to mention the show, which was excellent. We used Uber for the evening, which was quick and readily available. Altogether a wonderful experience, one of the best places to eat dinner and see a concert!

Traveled to Alexandria for a holiday party with colleagues. The venue was perfect for the event -- a 20s style theme party. There was a wonderful bar area with food and apps, an area for gambling (no real $ of course), a dance floor and a lovely area for seating with plenty of comfortable and beautifully decorated tables. The service was outstanding (carving station, bartenders, coat area, DJs, parking attendants), the food was delicious, the place (including the bathroom) was pristine. I really didn't find one thing that needed improvement. Would love to be invited to another event here ... it was worth the 45 min drive.

The food is great and there is an excellent selection of entrees. The service is out standing. If you're into sports, there are about a dozen television sets on concurrently. There are trivia contests on some nights in the bar area.
