Mount Tom State Reservation

We had a homeschool field trip here with kids of various ages. Kids had fun fishing and running around in the grassy picnic area. We did the loop trail at Bray Lake. It’s an easy trail for kids. We even encountered a beaver home, snakes and turtles. The bathrooms were open. No entrance fee at this time. Please be advised, there are poisonous rattlers. If you see snakes just leave them alone.

Mount Sugarloaf State Reservation

Take a picnic. Easy drive (or more difficult hike) to top with such an amazing, serene view of river, mountains & countryside. Cover park shelter enables picnicking in all weathers. Observation platform in low building designed with vague Frank LLoyd Wright feel. Must pay to park whether at top or bottom of mountain. CLOSES MID OCTOBER!

Silvio O. Conte National Fish and Wildlife Refuge

Beautiful and fully accessible boardwalk that crams half a dozen ecosystems into a loop of about a mile. I go there several times a year, because it's aways different: the leaf colors, the incredible bird diversity, the interaction of forest, marsh, and open plain. Plus it's a place I can take people who don't hike well enough to do the more challenging trails in the area.

What an adorable zoo! From the sweet camels that eat from your hand to the monkeys who swing and play to the wolves who run around their yard. It is so perfect for a day trip! I come here every year and every year it gets better! They just opened a new beaver exhibit with a baby beaver and an orphaned beaver. They take in animals that otherwise wouldnt have a home. Their signage explains everything. Not too expensive to get in either!

This is one of the great places to go to walk in the woods. Icamehereas a child with my school (something they don't do anymore).I take my daughter here and it's a great hike. With the stream cutting thru most of it it's a peaceful walk. At time you will see the bald eagle that flys by here and there. There are places to sit along the trail and they trails are marked.

Van Horn Park

A very good park to walk around. It has tennis courts, trails, bike trails and big field to play football or soccer.
