White Memorial Conservation Center

What a beautiful and extensive place. In one not-too-large area are a nice variety of habitats and views - woods, swamp, lake-shore, scenic heights. There are extensive marked trails, and occasional explanatory signs. My wife and I were originally going to come here in May for the excellent birdwatching opportunities. We delayed our travels because of the pandemic and visited in November, when there are far fewer birds. But it was so lovely, I was happy to be there anyway. I hope to come back when the visitors center reopens and the bird migration is passing through. The location is also near several good restaurants and shops in Bantam and Litchfield. I didn't answer Tripadvisor's question about length of visit, because there are lots of possibilities, from a short half-hour trail to a couple days exploring various trails.

McLean Game Refuge

This pleasant, quiet park is a beautiful way to go for a relatively easy hike and admire both the scenery and any animals you might see. There are plenty of trails of varying difficulties, as well as 2-3 lakes. This park is also a wildlife refuge and all of the animals are protected, so you can't hunt or fish here, but don't let that stop you from taking in the stunning serenity of the place. This is also a great place for bird-watching. I think this place is a bit less well-known than some of the state parks, so it's a good opportunity to be outside during physical distancing, and it's less crowded in general (especially since it's such a big place).

St Marys by the Sea

St. Mary's by the Sea is one of the 3 great coastal parts of Bridgeport. It's on the west shoreline, separated from Fairfield by Ash Creek, with its eastern end ending within the boundaries of beautiful Black Rock Harbor and its view of Fayerwether Light. The park is 22 skinny acres with sidewalk from east to west, and a gorgeous view of Long Island Sound. Benches and picnic tables are available, and it is well-traveled by local Black Rockers and by out-of-towners. WARNING; Periodically, our local police DO check to see if you have a parking sticker.

Flanders Nature Center

Reviewed By dustythoughts - Manchester, United States

This calm, quiet, nature center is a great way to get out and enjoy nature, especially since this center is dedicated to fostering the appreciation of the outdoors. They have a wide variety of educational activities (although you should check the calendar, in case they change things due to COVID): they have trail hikes, photography sessions, beekeeping, and an assortment of children's activities. This is a wonderful place to connect to the outdoors and to learn something interesting at the same time.
