The Yading Natural Reserve is exquisite and humbling and out-of-this-world beautiful - and the most exhausting thing I have ever done! ! ! Remember, it's 15,000 feet above sea level - I took high altitude pills and carried oxygen (in a blue pillow, obtained in Yading, from the Hospital), and I still was totally exhausted - and exhilarated by what I saw ! The mountain peaks, the glacial lakes, the waterfalls, the prayer flags, the thousand other people who were either crying or gasping for breath, or taking selfies, made it an unforgettable experience! Everyone on the path was going through the same thing, so people were supportive, concerned, friendly, and EAGER to have their picture taken with waiguoren "foreigners"! Prepare yourself for this visit - it can be a killer - but, by golly, it is AWESOME !!!

Really enjoyed the walk around the park (there is a car-train that can drive you around if you are less mobile). Several nice enclosures with pandas of varying age groups. Didn’t see any really small babies though. They also have some red pandas and even a black bear. Worth a visit!

Mount Emei (Emeishan)

A scenic mountain area houses important Buddhist temples.

Reviewed By MattwalesNorthWales - Chengdu, China

A must see place if you are in this part of the world. One of the important Buddhist Mountains in China. If, unlike me you love walking uphill you can climb this on foot but it will take about 4 days. I settled for a full day trip. Wrap up warm in winter as the top will be a lot colder than the bottom. You can buy a combined ticket for 160¥ which will take you from Emeishan railway station up the mountain. The journey is not for those, weak of stomach as the road snakes up the mountain, contains a lot of chicanes, and the drivers don't hang around. There is a pee stop half way and the bus may stop to add snow chains to the wheels in winter. Once at the top bus station you have to walk for about 2km through the monkey reserve to get the cable car which will whizz you right to the summit. At the summit you may be rewarded with a spectacular view as well as a variety of temples, shops and restaurants to explore. You can stay in a hotel at the top so that you can see the sunrise, but its not cheap. Please note the last cable car is at 5.30 and the last bus home is at 6pm. Great day trip

Wolong Giant Panda Nature Reserve

Located at 6,500 feet in the verdant mountains of Sichuan Province, this reserve is one of the last strongholds of the giant panda

Reviewed By ellenjane10 - Niagara Falls, Canada

I travelled to the Wolong Giant Panda Research Centre by private car with a Chinese lady driver. It cost me about $200 Canadian and was well worth it. We visited both the Wolong Panda Centre and the Dujiangyan Panda Centre. I paid for my driver to accompany me inside the Centres and this proved to be wise as she used her phone to tell me details about the pandas and the parks. I had visited the Wolong Centre before the terrible earthquake of 2007. At that time the park was small and modest, but it had 16 one-year-old pandas!!! I was curious to see how much the park had changed. I was truly amazed by the development of large enclosures with lots of natural activities for the pandas to enjoy. The new Wolong Panda Centre nestled in the Wenqiao mountains is absolutely wonderful. At each enclosure, there are signs telling the visitor the names and ages of the pandas. If you can spare the time, Wolong is a must for the panda enthusiast.

Mount Qingcheng

A natural scenic area and a holy mountain of Taoism.

Reviewed By jonascn - Singapore, Singapore

Mount Qingcheng is a short distance away from Dujianyan. There is an excitement in the desire to reach the highest peak when climbing the mountain. However the steps up the mountain is quite steep, especially the last 30 minutes and can be slippery during winter. There are porters to help you up the mountain at a cost (though one does sympathise the porters who are in their 50s too). There is also a photo taking service a the top of the mountain which a beautiful temple, especially during winter due to the thick clouds. The air is filled with the smoke from the joss sticks. There is a certain level of accomplishment amid the achy legs when you reach the top. Hence, this is well recommended for travellers looking for adventure. However, the main drawback of the area is the hidden costs you have to bear with to enjoy a complete experience. The site ticket is 80RMB. To proceed to the mountain, you have to 20 RMB for a 2 way mini bus journey to the river coast, after which you have to pay 10 RMB for a 2 way boat ride to an area closer to the mountain. There is also a 60RMB cable car to proceed to the base of the mountain before walking up. There is a need to factor in these costs when you are planning your trip. It is also difficult to avoid this payment as the journey without is much longer. Do also take note of the different operating hours during winter. It opens 8.30am to 5.30pm from May to October, and 9am to 5pm from November to April. Overall, if you can get over the hidden costs and the physical requirements, this is well worth the trip.

The park is huge, there are many pandas spread out at different locations. I would be surprised if you don't see one out there during your visit. We saw different groups of pandas - baby pandas, adult pandas, red pandas,....on the ground, on trees, and on wooden structures,....They are so cute! We took lots of pictures and video clips. We came by taxi from the Qingcheng Mountain Base to the Main Entrance (40 RMB). At the entrance is a special desk for foreigners with a English speaking person. We enjoyed the walk on the hanging bridge over the Feishayan Spillway, where during the flooding season the stone and sand will be deposited. We followed the Eastern Road on the Fish, the divider of the inner and outer River. We reached a food area, where we enjoyed local dishes with a Harbin Beer. Further up the island you reach the Yuzui Water dividing Dike. The inner River will bring the water to the Chengdu plain for irrigation, and the outer river will bring away the additional flood water in rainy saison, avoiding the flooding of the Chengdu area for over 2000 years! Over the Anlan Suspension Bridge we reached the path to the Julei Pass, where you have a good view over the whole Dujiangyan Scenic Area. On the way down you reach the Shidian Temple and the antique town. Walking down the main street with many shops and food outlets, you reach the ancient Gate. Walk through the gate, cross the bridge ahead and turn right into the open park. Cross the park and turn right on the street ahead. After crossing the bride you see on the right hand side a glas covered stairway, leading down to the Lidui Park Station, where you can take the High Speed Train back to Chengdu (20 RMB). Calculate 3 hours or more for an enjoyable excursion within the Lidui Park.
