Barkly Gardens were opened in 1867, making it one of the earliest gardens in Melbourne -- it is the only residential garden square in Richmond, although they are not uncommon in London, England. The gardens are quiet and elegant and amazingly they are only a few hundred yards (meters) from busy Swan St. Dogs are welcome, on-leash and off-leash. The BBQs are popular with families, as is the newly-renovated playground area. Barkly Gardens are a blessing in this heavily built-up area, and are a marvelous resource for strollers and families.

The Burnley Gardens are on the southern side of Swan Street. The are managed by the University of Melbourne but are open to the public. The Gardens were gazetted in 1860 and establishment began in 1861. So, some the trees are very old. They are a teaching garden, so you'll find many of the trees are labelled with their botanical names. Please respect the gardens, don't take any plant material and keep your dog on a leash. You can join the Friends of Burnley Gardens for a small fee and enjoy monthly lectures and workshops.. There are regular plant sales when it's COVID allowed. Please note that the nearest toilets are in the car park at Leonda (over the river) or the Kevin Bartlett Sports Reserve.

O'Connell Reserve is a green area that adjoins the Yarra River, near Bridge Rd. It gives access to the Yarra River Trail. It's good for bike riders, there is also a mooring for small boats. It has two rotundas and drinking fountains. By the way, if you want to hold an event, you can get a permit from the City of Yarra.
