Lake Yojoa is the largest natural lake in Honduras, surrounded by mountains and formed by a volcano. The northern part of the lake near Las Naranjos Park is the most spectacular part of lake, sitting in the shadow of Santa Barbara mountain, the second largest peak in Honduras. Along the bank there are plenty of small shops to rent kayaks on the lake. Surrounding the lake are several parks including my favorite Parque Nacional Cerro Azul Meambar. You can easily fill two or more days here swimming, kayaking, birdwatching, hiking in cloud forests, seeing waterfalls and more.

Guided hiking trails in El Merendon mountain range. Trails are 2km and an estimated 45 minutes of travel time. San Pedro Sulas only private hiking destination. Recommended times are 8am and 9am to better see wildlife ( toucans, armadillo etc..) We have a look out point of SPS and a swinging bridge as well as San Pedro Sulas only canopy zipline. Once finished with the hike feel free to grab a bite to eat or a freshly made juice to cool down.

The drive to the zoo is about an hour and half from San Pedro sula. The last 9 Kms are on a dirt road but the road is in good condition. There are a lot of great animals and the have a ton of large cats. We learned that a large number of the tigers and jaguars have actually been born there. Part of the zoo is uphill so wear comfortable shoes. They have restaurants to eat lunch and cabins where you can spend the night. They have some activities for an additional fee (horse back riding, hike to some caves, a train ride, canopy). They have some pretty large pools where you can swim. The caves are a 30 mins walk each way. Overall it’s a great place to spend a day and kids have a lot of fun.

Cerro Azul Meámbar National Park or ‘PANACAM’ features three trails 0.3km, 0.7km and 7.0km. The park has waterfalls, creeks, lookouts over Lake Yojoa, tropical and cloud forest, and a variety of birds, plants, trees and flowers. The trails are well-marked and well-maintained. The trailhead is located at Panacam Lodge (directions: turn off CA-5 at La Guama, headed up to Santa Elena and follow the many signs to the park). This is an excellent hike with hard to beat views. Highly recommend.
