The garden at La Mothe was awarded the label "Jardin Remarquable" by the French Cultural Ministre in 2013.La Mothe is a private garden of 3500m2 created by an artist around an old Aveyron farm. It was started in 1997.The barn has been restored and there is an exhibition of items for sale, with all profits going to a charity.Drinks and homemade cakes are served daily during the summer.
I visit a lot of gardens and this one stopped me in my tracks....it’s the first garden I have thought of having a soul. Three of us, a couple and my sister visited this garden ( Trip advisor didn’t allow for this category!) where the planting encouraged a slow thoughtful exploration, at each turn a new vista opened up and layered clipped shrubs held the views. Artifice there was, but the way this garden is presented is a very personal piece of work, the hand of an artist shows. We spent a few hours here not wanting to leave, there was fun too, with kittens rolling out from under leaves, Peacock babes being herded by mum and other wildlife I’ve forgotten...oh a mouse, too taken with everything. The garden settles warmly around the house and you just want to stay longer......I will next time, by going earlier!
