A small but perfectly formed exhibition exploring the 3000 million years of geology of the far north west of Scotland. We also offer a wide range of geology tours tailored to all age ranges and prior knolwedge levels, led by geologist Bjorn Hardarsson. The tours range in duration from 2 to 5 hours and times are flexible to suit your availability. Drop in to the exhibition and book with Bjorn directly or give us a call on 0191 511 411.
After visiting Bjorn’s exhibition on a rainy day (so much fascinating information packed into such a compact space), we decided to take the opportunity to enjoy one of Bjorn’s guided walks. It was a most enjoyable afternoon. Durness and surrounds is quite special geologically and Bjorn took the time to show us some of the fascinating geology of the area and explain its importance in our earth’s history. We were also treated to much local archeological and more recent history as a bonus. I would strongly recommend spending some time visiting the exhibition and if possible taking the time to join one of Bjorn’s excellent walks.

Spend a day in the countryside, uncover Scotland's unique rural history and meet the animals on the farm. Advance booking is required for all visitors - please book a timed entry ticket online at nms.ac.uk/rural before your visit. Follow the route around the museum to find out how rural life, farming and the landscape have changed in 300 years. Discover stories of life on the land and see Scotland's largest collection of tractors, combine harvesters and other farming machinery. Just a short walk from the museum is the working farm, home to Ayrshire, Aberdeen Angus and Highland cattle, Tamworth pigs, sheep, hens and Clydesdale horses. Visit the onsite cafe, or bring your own picnic to eat in our outdoor picnic area. We’re Good to Go: A range of safety measures have been put in place.
We spend a lot of time with our grandson and this is a great venue. Dressing up and decent play plus of course the farm. Great cafe and friendly staff team

Explore the diversity of the natural world, world cultures, science and technology, art, design and fashion, and Scottish history, all under one roof.
We went yesterday with our two youngish girls. It was amazing: got to see Dolly the Sheep (stuffed, of course), lots of great interactive exhibits for the kids, great telephone and early computer exhibit, a great mineral display, meteorites, one on the Scottish clearings and so much more we couldn’t get through even half of it before exhibit and crowd fatigue hit (Fringe is on). Defo worth it.

The D'Arcy Thompson Zoology Museum, University of Dundee, houses many fascinating specimens from around the world. Most of them were collected by the celebrated Sir D'Arcy Wentworth Thompson, the first Professor of Biology at Dundee. Because the museum is used throughout the year for University teaching, our opening hours are restricted - we open on the second Saturday afternoon of every month and every Friday afternoon during the summer. Happy to open by appointment by other times, so please get in touch!

What a great little one-room museum dedicated to the history and finds of the area. Lots to see and wonderful to hear the stories of the founder himself. Well worth putting this on the itinerary when you're on Trotternish.

Return trip to Mallaig by car this time, beautiful sunny day. Waiting on ferry over to Skye so wandered back into heritage centre. Same cheery lady was on and overheard her once again giving directions to Restaurants in Mallaig. She remembered me too, spent time having a look around and bought bits in the shop. Well worth spending time in the heritage, lovely cheery staff. Lovely visit to a busy Mallaig on Wednesday 28 August hope to be back next year.
