Zagreb got its start as two medieval fortress towns atop hills overlooking the Sava River, and was reborn in the Baroque period as center of business, perfectly located on routes connecting Central Europe to the Adriatic Sea. These days, Zagreb is the heart of contemporary Croatia’s culture, art, sports, and academics, but its history is not forgotten. The unique blend of medieval towers, 19th century palaces, open-air markets, and ancient cathedrals, make Zagreb the perfect city to explore.

The Chocolate Museum of Zagreb is a unique place dedicated to chocolate, its historical, geographical and cultural meaning. We will take our visitors on an interactive trip through time and space, engaging all senses - sight, scent, touch, sound and of course taste. The gift shop will carry assorted handmade chocolate from artisan Croatian chocolatiers.
This museum was excellent. First, our ticket was a rectangular box with a spoon, a cocoa bean and samples of chocolate that we had to try throughout the museum at designated spots in each of the 7 galleries. Second, it was really really well done. It traced the origins of cocoa beans, explained how they are harvested and prepared and how the beverage known as the drink of the gods by the ancient Aztec and Maya people came to Europe in the 16th century and later in the 19th century became edible in bars. Really fascinating. Our favorite place was a savoring station where you had to sample three different kinds of chocolate, white, milk, and dark, from little pumps--this is where the spoon came in handy. It was a really entertaining experience for kids too, and not just the sampling!

This 19th-century building was one of the first to be custom-designed museums in Europe and contains a spectacular collection of glasses and tapestries.
I was totally impressed by the number and variety of exhibits on display. As I walked from the first floor to the third floor, I kept saying, " wow!". The exhibits include religious statues, paintings, priests' vestments, exquisite wood furnitures, porcelains, bells, clocks, gowns. etc. The three female employees I met during my visit were all very friendly and helpful. Highly recommended to visit! Entrance fee is 40 kunas per person, reduced to 20 kunas for children and seniors.

Excellent displays which were in English and Croatian made visiting this amazing museum a pleasure. The well organized layout, uncluttered display of artifacts and well lit rooms made the tour of the building an easy and educational stop for an afternoon.

Even if you know nothing about the Naive Art movement, you'll find paintings to enjoy in this four room museum. Climb the winding stairs to the upper level to pay for your ticket, and walk into a series of rooms with well-lit and interesting pieces. Even without studying or being trained, these artists painted some fascinating pieces.
