We had a wonderful visit to create a very inexpensive couple of hours of fun. My son (8) and I (29) went to visit the Museum and were treated to a personal guided tour with experienced staff. In my opinion the place looks a lot like a mechanics hanger as well as a historic museum and functions to teach both theory of flight, mechanics of flight, and history of military in the area. Great for tourist and Windsorites alike.

Our Heritage Village is a journey back in time to 15 buildings that have been placed here from all over Essex County. We were planning a multi-generational day out (parents, grandparents and child (12 yrs old) and found saw this museum on Trip Advisor. Having grown-up in Tecumseh, I was surprised to learn about this gem of a place. We decided to take a tour of both the transportation museum and the heritage village and were so glad we did. Although we all enjoyed the museum, it was particularly fun for my parents to see cars from their youth and my daughter loved the 1927 caravan. It was enlightening to see all the local links to this industry - well beyond what I had known growing up in this automotive area. The museum guide was very knowledgeable and answered the numerous questions we had. Once the tour was done, we went back around to read the various placards and look at our favourites again before going to the Hertiage Village outside. The Village is small - approx. 15 buildings but they are in good condition and well presented so you feel you have stepped back in time. We particularly enjoyed the schoolhouse and the Jack Miner house. The Village is a good walk from the museum and might be a bit of a challenge for the elderly or those with mobility issues. The steps into buildings were also a bit difficult for my father who is in his late 80s. However, we all thoroughly enjoyed the visit. We spent 2hrs and easily could have spent 3.

Amherstburg Freedom Museum

Reviewed By markbQ4119SP - Canada, null

Our day started with our journey to the Windsor area from the Brant Area which took about 2.5 hrs west on 401 west. The drive this way is a little boring and we were glad to finally arrive in Amherstburg which seems to be a quaint little town that sits on the mouth of the Detroit river where it opens up to lake Ontario! We arrived and parked our car in the designated parking spot and went in. We payed $18 for two adults and two kids..Our kids were free due to being both under 6. We chose the guided tour which was great and informative and vistited to church first which was great. It was a special moment for my wife and the stories and history that was presented to us was impactful to say the least. After that, we went to the common house which depicted a home that the slaves and decendents lived in till the the 1980's. After this we went to see the art upstairs which we also loved. The guide offered to put the video on for us upstairs but we declined. lots to read, interesting place, amazing stories and great part of canadian history that doesnt get talked about enough. a great little museum. Worth our drive!
