DakshinaChitra Museum

A unique concept of bringing South India’s cultural traditions all under one roof, Dakshin Chitra is a little out of the city (25 kilometers) but certainly worth your while. Dakshin Chitra actually means "picture of the south" and that’s exactly what you should expect to see. Educational and fun at the same time, this is a center for a complete orientation to Southern India’s four states. You can experience the living traditions, performing arts, music, crafts and architecture on the 10-acre spread. The earthy feel of the structure and its surroundings transport visitors into the cultural milieu. Dakshin Chitra is great for both children and adults as you can try your hand at glass blowing, pottery and traditional games.

On an historical trip through South India we visited Dakshina Chitra. It was a real joy to experience this beautiful collection of antique houses from all four southern-Indian states. The signs in English are informative. There were demonstrations of weaving, pottery, henna application, dances and painting in the various regional styles. There is a good film illustrating the way people lived in the recent past. The shop has a well stocked selection of handcrafted objects and there is a bazaar where you can buy directly from the artists who demonstrate their craft for you. The restaurant serves authentic South Indian food and is reasonably priced. Its strength is highlighting Hindu, Christian and Muslim heritage. There are activities for kids like colouring, shell decorations, handicraft etc. In the evenings there are sometimes excellent dance performances in the amphitheatre. Ample parking space.

This museum is located in a very calm place within the Pudukkottai city. Unexpectedly after entering we realised that it has a treasure of information for students. It has a good collections of variety os species, fishes, birds and also articles used by the people who lived in those areas long ago. They have installed a Dinosaur replica which also has a little show during certain timings of the day which makes movement and sound. A treat for the kids to watch. India Seashell Museum

Reviewed By pandyanathanb

During our stay in a resort in Mahabalipuram with our full family, we decided to spend half a day for the routine sight seeing to educate my grandsons on the Indian History aspect of this area. At first we were skeptical to visit the Sea Shell Museum, as we did not know what to expect. After going in, we were stunned and mind blown by what we saw. There were 40,000 shells from all over the world --very neatly displayed and labelled. My grandsons refused to come out of the museum. There is an aquarium and a Pearl Museum also which the kids enjoyed and which were very interesting and educational. The shop called Maya Bazaar also had some v nice things which can be bought as souvenirs. I highly recommend this Museum for all.. young and old.. It has to be seen to be believed.
