Calling itself "The Heart & Soul of the Chesapeake Bay," the town of Saint Michaels, Maryland retains the look and feel of a 19th century seaport. Walk on red brick sidewalks past the Victorian homes and boutique shops of the historic district, or head down to the pier in search of famously fresh seafood. The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum preserves the history of Saint Michaels, with restored examples of "bugeyes" and "skipjacks," unique boats developed by the fisherman of Chesapeake Bay.

Gregorio Gallery offers visitors a view of the Eastern Shore through the eyes and talents of local artists and craftsmen. Meet local photographer and gallery owner, Peter Gregorio, enjoy the work of the talented local potter, Ann Krestensen, browse Mark Orr's Scavenger Art. Whether you are interested in finding the perfect gift, the perfect memento, or simply looking for an oasis in the busy landscape of St. Michaels, you will be glad you visited Gregorio Gallery.
This is a great gallery!! I couldn't decide WHICH piece to buy. Fortunately, there are prints available - made it more affordable. I ended up buying the perfect piece for my upstairs bedroom. It was, I'll admit - a little bit off mark from the normal work of Peter Gregorio -he's mainly about unbelievable sunsets on the eastern shore, boxers and gritty things like old abandoned boats. (NOT JUST THAT!! JUST SAYIN!!) But I loved his point of view and found something that was perfect for me - something pretty unusual. When I wake up in the morning and see this piece of mainly aqua, with a bit of pink and red, it makes me happy.

*Before visiting, please visit welcome.cbmm.org for updates on our reopening. Each time you experience the Chesapeake Bay with us, you’ll find something different. Be sure to talk to our Shipwrights and apprentices in our Shipyard for insight into their current work in progress. Additionally, CBMM offers changing exhibitions, educational programs, boat rides on the Miles River, small craft rentals, and annual festivals celebrating Chesapeake Bay culture, boats, seafood, and history. With a waterfront, park-like setting, including numerous outdoor and indoor exhibitions, a Museum Store (with an ATM machine), and a member’s marina, you’ll find us on the Miles River in the heart of the historic town of St. Michaels. With two-day general admission, we encourage you to take a harbor-side stroll over Honeymoon Bridge to enjoy unique shopping, delicious dining, and fabulous lodging experiences. And be sure to check out the local brewery, winery, and distillery, and other town-wide events.
Learned a great deal about how the English settlers treated the Native Americans (who taught them about oysters and crabbing); the two black resorts built in the Jim Crow era; the story about the yacht Isabel (was in a different slip than advertised - near the reconstruction shed) which was donated to the museum along with large funding grants to build the museum building; how life was like on a screw-pile lighthouse remotely placed in the bay. Got an entrance fee discount by having a Blue Heron coffee cup. May also apply to other local businesses.

Note: Full access to the lighthouse is limited due to COVID-19. Please visit welcome.cbmm.org for details. Ascend the steps of the Hooper Strait Lighthouse and travel back in time to learn how 19th century lighthouse keepers tended their station in the middle of the Bay. Through this hands-on exhibit, visitors can climb the sea hatch, tend the huge lens, or stand watch on the lookout for ships or fog, experiencing firsthand the solitary, often heroic lives of Hooper Strait lighthouse keepers. The 1879 Hooper Strait Lighthouse, now standing on Navy Point, was originally built in 1879 to light the way for boats passing through the shallow, dangerous shoals of Hooper Strait, a thoroughfare for boats bound from the Chesapeake Bay across Tangier Sound to Deal Island or places along the Nanticoke and Wicomico Rivers. As a “screwpile” lighthouse, it is built on special iron pilings which were tipped with a screw that could be turned into the muddy bottom for a depth of 10 feet or more.
Very eye opening exhibit (on the grounds of the CBMM). This particular screw-pile lighthouse was 2 miles off shore when it was in use. Had no idea of the arduous life of watermen.

Due to the Covid pandemic sadly enough the museum is temporarily closed to visitors; However, the thoughtful staff has provided everything needed for a sufficient self-guided walking tour. We took the tour and found it to be a wonderful and very informative experience. We will definitely visit if and when life returns back to normal and participate in the live tour version to learn a little more and be able to ask a few questions.
