Magnificent black-sand beach at the base of a very steep trail down the cliff through beautiful forest. Bring water! You will need it. How hard is it to get to? There are about 650 irregular “steps” cut into and built out of the dirt and sometimes it is slow and slightly scary going. If anyone in your party is not in good shape or afraid of heights you might want to let them sit it out. But dozens of fit young people bounded past us, in both directions, so if you’re one of those it’s fine. In any case, if you go slow enough you will be fine – it would be very hard to actually fall a long way. On the other hand, while we were on the beach a woman came down limping badly, having apparently fallen and maybe twisted an ankle. A first aid boat was summoned and she swam out to it and left that way rather than having to climb back up. How crowded? At 4pm on a sunny Thursday in late July the beach was moderately crowded but not jam packed. It is a pretty small beach, maybe 100 meters from one end to the other (beautiful rock walls at either end) and only maybe 40 meters from waterline to cliff, so with a couple of hundred people on it it looks well used.

The "Amedeo Lia" museum is located in the old convent of the minimites of St. Francis from Paola, who settled in the town of la Spezia in about 1620. The collection includes about 1200 works of all kinds, classical, late antique, mediaeval, up to the 18th century. There are paintings, miniatures, bronze, copper, ivory and wooden statues, glassware, tin-glazed pottery and art objects which document the taste and culture of Italian and European art.

Head upstairs for the collection of ships figureheads. Head through the room with lots of guns and torpedoes in it to the very interesting display of early (1969) diving technology. There’s a short film showing each technique in action. This is well worth the small entry fee. The wooden figureheads are a superb extra.

The location of the castle is excellent for a panoramic view of the port facilities and the Gulf of La Spezia. Converted into a museum, the castle has several collections of archaeological artifacts from the Roman and earlier era. There are many systems of tiers to reach the castle, but also a system of 2 public lifts at the end of Via Indipendenza, in 2 sections, which make it easier.
