Oita Art Museum is designed to preserve the wonderful natural environment of the Uenogaoka Park under the basic ideas of "a museum which is opened for everyone","a museum that co-exists with the environment" and "a museum which has a variety of space". It is the open structure which is possible to come and go from a walk in the park, and the earth colored building harmonizes with the nature of the Ueno-no-mori. The Entrance Hall is full of sunshine. We can command a whole view of the central city from the observation terrace, the restaurant and the bridge, and feel much of nature in the Ueno-no-mari in every season. We can always appreciate art collection in the Permanent Exhibition Gallery and from time to time special exhibitions will be held in the Special Exhibition Galery. It is not only art appreciation but also a multi-faceted museum.

I went to Oita to check out the architecture of this museum designed by Ban Shigeru. It's about 15-20 minutes' walk from Oita Station. It's a sunny day and the design is particularly impressive in the strong sunlight. The atrium is two-story high and airy, enclosed by glass, with artworks, sculptures, installations and displays scattered around. It is free for everyone and acts as a public space. There is a small cafe and museum shop on the ground floor, and another cafe on the upper floor. There were sundry exhibitions (with entrance fee) in the exhibition rooms at the time of visit, and many students went. On the upper floor, you can see wooden ceiling structures, typical of Ban Shigeru's design. If you are interested in architecture and design, and also Ban Shigeru's work, this museum is highly recommended.
