Top 10 Museums in New Forest National Park Hampshire, England

February 8, 2022 Agatha Simes

If you need a word to perfectly describe New Forest, “welcoming” would be it. The lowland (i.e. no mountains) park is filled with scenic views and wide trails that beg to be explored as they wind through centuries-old woodlands. Visit Bolderwood, a protected forest and deer sanctuary that was once the hunting grounds of the Norman kings. Fish at Moors Valley before heading skyward for a treetops walk. Prefer the country-house life? Head to Beaulieu, where you can get lost in the Victorian-era at the Palace House before following in the footsteps of medieval monks at the property’s abbey.

Hurst Castle

Located within the New Forest National Park, Hurst Castle is situated on the seaward end of the shingle spit that extends 1.5 miles from Milford-on-Sea, Hampshire. Built by Henry VIII as a chain of fortresses to protect the Solent in 1544, this is the site where Charles I was imprisoned in 1648 before being taken to his trial and execution in London. The castle was modernised during the Napoleonic wars and again in the 1870s when the enormous armoured wings were added, making it the largest coastal fort in the world. Two of the huge 38-ton guns installed in the 1870s can be viewed in their casemates together with other weapons developed through 412 years of military use. During World War II, Hurst was manned with coastal gun batteries and searchlights. You can get to Hurst Castle by ferry from Keyhaven Quay (sat nav postcode: SO41 0TP) or you can walk along the shingle Hurst Spit. The castle is currently closed, however refreshments are available from outside the castle.

Our visit to Hurst Castle was definitely a highlight of our trip to the New Forest, probably second only to a particularly great tree at Bolderwood Deer Sanctuary. We had a very enjoyable mooch around (tudor castle to the left, tea room to the right) learning about the history (built by Henry VIII, King Charles I was a prisoner there) and enjoying the views from the top. Room 8 is definitely worth a visit. Excellent lighting.

What a wonderful little museum this is. We decided to pop in for an hour or two and loved seeing the dolls house, the air raid shelter and all the information on Augustus John. The staff were knowledgeable and very friendly, and it was a lovely few hours with our little one. They even had fancy dress clothing for kids (ours was a little too small for them) Well worth a visit and a donation to keep this little gem going.

Excellent historical resource, not only for the immense WW11 and WW11 Airfield history of the New Forest, but internationally. Allied Forces represented here include British, Canadian, Free Czechoslovakian (as it was then), Free Polish and the United States State of the Art Interactive screens convey historic aviation information, including aeroplane design, crew biographies, technical wartime innovation, individual airfield histories, Flying Schools, civilian recollections. There are many displays of incredibly accurate dioramas of dogfights seen first-hand over the New Forest, including the dogfight and crash of an enemy aircraft. Next to this is part of the actual aircraft's propeller, donated by the Forest farming family on whose land the aircraft was shot down. Artefacts on display include Pilot flying logs, a WW11 Flying Jacket and Helmet - still in excellent condition - parts of engines, photos, diaries, personal letters, Uniforms, accounts of ops, especially Allied preparation for D-Day, June 6th 1944. Birds-eye dioramas of individual wartime New Forest airfields are scattered amongst the many wonderful aeroplanes, aircrew, airfield transport models all minutely accurate. Many of these created by Dr Goodall himself (head honcho, ex-Parachute Regiment and vast historical aviation knowledge) with the help of expert local modelling clubs. An excellent Research Library resolved a few questions although every member of Staff has unlimited knowledge Aviation related books are also available to buy to swell the Museum's funds; and satisfy visitors interests. A wartime Aviation gallery has been created on the upper floor of the Museum. Here I unexpectedly found the painting of a dogfight dramatically fought by a British RAF pilot of the Hornchurch Eagles. A pilot I am currently researching for his family. A very moving experience bringing the horrific realities of war very close. The cafe is very bright, clean with a selection of hot and cold drinks, biscuits and they do an excellent toasted hot-cross bun with butter - I can tell you from first hand experience! There are the usual facilities too. Also Car Parking.
