Top 10 Museums in Lake Tahoe (California), Lake Tahoe (California)

December 1, 2021 Kiesha Cripe

Basking in its 300 days of sunshine, Lake Tahoe is a haven for outdoor fun in every season. Swimming, kayaking and windsurfing are popular in the summer months, while epic snowfall makes for spectacular skiing in winter. For those who prefer indoor fun, there's plenty of that in Tahoe, too. With 24-hour casinos and a flashy nightlife scene, the area has a tangible Vegas vibe. A sprinkle of bling, if you will. Not surprising, since Lake Tahoe straddles the border between California and Nevada.

My wife and i used to live in this area so we always like to bring newbies here for some exploring. Parking is easy to find, right off 89. Typically the lot is packed in the summer but not so much in the fall. A short, flat walk towards the beach will get you to the old "estates" which are fun to photograph and peruse. I've never taken the tour not have I ever been inside any of them, but it is doable. Depending on water level, the beach could be very small or nicely large. It is always beautiful though. This part will take you about an hour at most. One thing we like to do is hike from the parking lot towards 89, cross the highway, and head towards Fallen Leaf Lake. The trail starts at 89 where Taylor Creek crosses under. There is a road sign for a Sno-Park where the trail starts. Stay on the dirt road to the right, about a half mile of walking will take you to a small parking area. At this point, go through the cutout in the fence and you are on your way to the lake. The trail pretty much stays next to Taylor Creek most of the way. It is fairly flat and easy to navigate. On this trip we did see a mother bear with her Cubs, so be advised. Great family hike. About 30 minutes at most from Tallac Historical.

Gatekeeper's Museum

The North Lake Tahoe Historical Society preserves, presents and interprets the history of North Lake Tahoe both in a regional context and in the larger context of the American West. We do this in a manner that is engaging, educational and culturally sensitive through innovative programming and exhibits at the Gatekeeper's and Watson Cabin Museums of the NLTHS. The Gatekeeper's Museum and Watson Cabin place emphasis on the cultural and geographical histories that influenced the development of North Lake Tahoe. The Marion Steinbach Indian Basket Museum places emphasis on the historical and contemporary basketry traditions of western North America, and seeks to promote cultural awareness through programming in collaboration and consultation with native American weavers and scholars.

Donner Memorial State Park and Emigrant Trail Museum

This museum documents the fascinating and tragic history of the Donner Party's journey to the west coast.

First, avoid the $10 parking lot charge by parking along the street if you can. The museum is well worth a stop, as it gives a good overview of what the emigrants faced on their trip west. There is a 26-minute film, and there are well maintained walking trails.

Wyland Galleries

Reviewed By 3Tcubed - Sedona, United States

Wyland has several Galleries in Hawaii, California, Nevada and Florida. The feature about half a dozen artists besides Wyland himself. I've been in many of them and all have pleasant knowledgeable art consultants that will send time with you to find a piece of art or souvenir to meet you budget. One of the nice things about Wyland's Galleries is they have inexpensive prints and jewlery, as well as limited edition artwork and statues.and a few originals that can run into real money (like the cost of a car real, but if your shopping for an original you know that). This Gallery will happily let you wander and look at your leisure, not hanging over you shoulder, or spend quality time with you to find things not necessarily on display. A couple of years ago they help me find a piece that had not been released, but because they work closely with Wyland they new was coming and would be in pre-publication in the near future. It was exactly what I was looking for and it arrive a few months later , and I appreciate that they went out of their way to help me find what I was looking for.
