Mt Pimard

Reviewed By ClaireHC1989 - London, United Kingdom

We booked the hike via our Sandals resort, and our tour guide Germaine (or Jermaine?) was so very funny, and we were laughing throughout the entire hike! The hike itself is really fun (although it is not your usual Sunday walk in the park). Germaine was so funny and also gave us interesting insights to St Lucia. The first photo is the view when you get there, the second the Mt Pinard, and the third the trail. We took 1 h and 45 min altogether with photo breaks, but Germaine said it is usually 2 hours. We went for an earlier hike at 8.45AM and am glad we did before the sun hit us too hard!

For 15 CUC per person we rode through the Silent Valley. The tour is fairly commercial as you are taken to lots of stops along the way for drinks, to buy coffe, tobacco and rum (rember to bring plenty of cash for suvineers). At each of these stops there an opitunity to learn from the farmers the process of making their products. Cigar - 4CUC Bottle of Rum - 20CUC Cocktails - 4CUC Lunch at Palador - 10CUC

It's not as easy as anyone would have you believe. Google maps will take you all around the island until you do find it. The walk up the mountain starts brisk and escalates to grueling as you traverse a well-beaten path riddled with unavoidable goat and cow poop. The first third of the hike is fair and easy to manage and the views are arguably as gorgeous as the top and the path begins to narrow around you. The second third is extremely intimidating. As a 6'3 230lb man I can say that I was afraid at moments as the grade is so steep you feel yourself pushing quickly to maintain momentum, or simply slowing to a crawl as you embrace the inevitable in your quest to avoid the poop. This section is very very narrow with steep drop and nothing but loose gravel to club. Little to no support and nothing on either side of you to break your fall. The third third of the hike is less arduous than the second. You have reached what you (think) to be the peak and you realize there is another....then another...and another after that. Reminding you that the mountains is so high, that you can't even see the top from the side. The second third of this hike was all poop and loose gravel causing you to slide. This final third is all slippery mud because you're now 900+ meters in the air and tropical could grace the mountainside DAILY. So where dry gravel and a steep grade was your enemy before, you're now battling muddy straight-aways that drop off a cliff on either side as you do your best not to fall.. The hike for a strong or experienced hiker could take 25 minutes if you chose to ignore the gorgeous views along the way that at times rival the peak. An average moderately active person could manage the hike in closer to 45 minutes as it's not especially strenuous, just a bit dangerous with considerable hazard. Don't recommend for children under 12 or adults without good balance and coordination. Consider getting here early to take advantage of the of limited parking and avoid the daily rainshowers. Bring sunglasses and great shoes with good grip. Bring water and make sure not to litter. Wear comfortable loose fitting clothing that you don't mind getting muddy/dusty. And bring your best camera. The views are stunning and 100% worth it. 100% recommend.

Mount Liamuiga

Reviewed By PamPeisnerCruiseOne

We read all of the reviews about how this was a strenuous hike and thought, "We are active and fit people, we can do it!" Well let me tell you, the hike is a beast! Super fun and beautiful though. It was quite a sense of accomplishment when you are sitting at the top looking down at the crater. We had a great tour guide in Hilton from Poinciana Tours. He made it fun and manageable. There were many spots that were tough to navigate and super challenging. You literally are holding yourself up by ropes at some points and scrambling up slippery rocks and tree roots. Several times on the way down we just slid on our bottoms because it was too slick to walk. Don't wear good clothes because you will be dirty when you finish. My fitbit said I hiked over 11 miles in 5 hours so it's a great workout! I would highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants a unique adventure but is fit enough and agile enough to handle it.

One of us had trained for the Jamaica Defense Force while the other had heard all of the stories about the narrow winding roads, the cool temperatures, the lush jungle, and of course, the stories of an 18 year old private and his first days from home. This was a visit coming for the past 40 years, but always delayed. It was a moving experience to watch the septuagenarian relive the start of his 20 year military career at a base founded n 1841 by the British. Little did they know their escape from yellow fever would be coming up on its 200th anniversary. Be sure to check out the museum on the base. We passed the small towns of Redlight and Irish Town as we traveled the curvy road back to Kingston. We were able to see all the way into the waters of Kingston Harbor from the winding road. Great day!

Arrived at the park around 8, paid our entry fee and drove the paved road to the parking area. The lot was full but we parked across the road in the overflow area. Started the hike at 8:17 finished in 50 minutes but if we did not stop for pictures on the way up or to let people pass we could easy cut 5 to 10 minutes off that. Maybe 10 minutes at the top and then 40 minutes down. It starts out as a hike on a basic park path and then gets a little rougher. The last 10 minutes or so you will need your hands to assist in climbing the rocks. Bring water, great view from the top. We had fun driving the roads but they are narrow and have some big hills. Wish I would have had more time and did other hikes. Seen 2 Curaçao deer and some lizards along the hike and roadway.

Mount Scenery

At 3,000 feet, Mount Scenery is the highest point on the mountainous island of Saba and can be reached via a difficult hike through the rainforest.

Reviewed By Manatee4Me - Charlotte, United States

The trail up Mount Scenery consists of packed dirt and carved stone steps. No two steps are the same height or width. If it has been rainy at all, chances are the steps are slick. A walking stick or pole is helpful (walking sticks are usually available at the little trailhead building). Once close to the top, I felt like I was in a scene from Jurassic Park: huge tree ferns, dense green foliage, rugged rock outcroppings, all partially obscured by swirling mist. And if you are fortunate to be there when the mist lifts, fabulous views of the island.

Nevis Peak Hike

This volcano is a favorite climbers, hikers and cyclists.

Reviewed By OliveoilYorkshire - Halifax, United Kingdom

I am a 68 year old not so fit grandmother and I did it! The first part, about a third, is on gentle but steep paths through the the forest. Then there is a river gully and ropes and rocks and tree roots. A warning of things to come. I was scared. The next section is all woodland steep pathways with the tree roots providing foot and handholds. The ropes start to become more frequent as the pathways gets steeper. My son lives on Nevis and is a horticulturist so I got some brilliant stuff on species, habitat and special plant characteristics as a bonus. Later I wasn’t listening as I was either so tired or so scared or both. This stretch was muddy and steep. On the last third the gradient really jacked up and instead of tree roots it was mostly rocks and boulders. Nearly all the very steep parts had ropes to help the climb. There were quite a few 15 to 20 foot near verticals. Footholds in most places but the soil was clay and wet so slippy. I did the climb in running shoes as it’s all I had with me and I didn’t have gloves. It was fine and the running shoes gave flexibility. I swallowed my pride and just kept asking my son for stops. Take lots of water and energy food. My Fitbit showed 3000 plus calories. My son was great and kind and didn’t complain about the stops once. It’s me and my stubborn pride and competitiveness that’s the problem not him! Anyway just when i thought it was never going to end. It did. The summit is small. The footprint of my spare bedroom. It was cloudy so no view. There is a box there as others have described but the book inside was wet and spoiled. Note for someone to get a replacement? I’m not doing this again. Don’t want to push my luck. There is a second summit, the higher one with the trig point. My son went off and did that and it took him 40 mins. He said it was overgrown and therefore a bit dangerous as the drops on the edge of the path weren’t visible. I think the journey back down was worse than the way up in many ways. My legs were tired which makes it dangerous and we took a different turn low down so had a hike to the car along the road. Well he did. I sat at Poor Mans Bar and had a cold Guinness!
