There are 2,000 years of history in Cologne, and visitors here will find everything from Roman towers to Gothic churches to fine examples of modern architecture. Cologne has a variety of museums, too—check out the Museum of Applied Art, the Museum Ludwig and, if you have a sweet tooth, the Chocolate Museum. Be forewarned, though—the gift shop at the latter will utterly ruin your diet.

We were on an AMA waterways river cruise and ported in Cologne for the day. Our tour guide was Marcus from Berlin. He was most likely one of the best tour guides we've ever had. He was a history teacher so extremely knowledgeable on culture, politics and geography PLUS he was super funny! Right when we started he stated to beware of the bicyclists since they will "run you over then ring their bell to celebrate"! If you can seek him out somehow, I promise it will be worth it! He provides a nice active walking tour around the city and will gear your visit to your interests. The City square with Martin Church, Brussels Bridge with all the padlocks, Town Hall Gothic Tower and photo stop at Tunnes & Schal statues & Josef Frings. At the Tunnes & Schal statues you step on their feet and rub his round nose for "good luck".
