Sadly the Windsor Garrison no longer uses this church, but it remains a shrine to the British Army with standards everywhere and the balcony fascia completely covered with memorials to various military campaigns. I was fortunate to visit on the day before Remembrance Sunday, so it was full of volunteers cleaning the interior and setting up for the following day’s service. I was able to have a fascinating talk with the vicar about the history of the church, which was initially funded by a donation by Queen Victoria. Prince Albert had a significant influence over its design and there’s a life sized statue of him in the entrance lobby. The magnificent interior is very definitely Victorian, but distinctly lighter and brighter than in many other churches of that era.

A life size bronze sculpture commemorates the story of Trooper Potts VC, the only man from Reading to be awarded the Victoria Cross. This was for his deeds in Gallipoli 21-23 August 1915 when he rescued a fellow man of Reading from almost certain death from in front of the Turkish lines. It took them 48 hours to get back to the British lines and for part of the way Trooper Potts strapped his severely wounded comrade, Trooper Andrews, to a shovel, he became known as The Hero with the Shovel. In addition there is a Roll of Honour which lists the 426 men of the Berkshire Yeomanry who gave their lives in the wars of the 20th Century. Information Boards tell the story of The Victoria Cross, The Berkshire Yeomanry and this VC story.

Irish guardsmen statue in Windsor high street is a six foot bronze on a plinth made from bronze salvaged from the Iraq war. Unveiled in 2009. Awesome statue and well worth thinking of their help.

In this lifesize bronze statue cast by the Queen’s own sculptor-in-ordinary Sir Edgar Boehm for her Silver Jubilee in 1887 Victoria appears the mistress of all she surveys. A decade later her statue was given a canopy for her Diamond Jubilee. Contemporary photographs show her funeral cortège passing by only three years later. What is striking is how little has changed around the statue over a century later apart from the demolition of a wall separating the footpath from the lawn at the foot of the castle in the early 1960s.
