With a name like "Vasquez" we expected some good Mexican food. Did not happen! The menu says, "Recommended by Enrique" (Enrique is the owner.) From our experience, he is the only one who would recommend it. Four of us ordered enchiladas, which are supposed to be a house specialty. They were terrible! It appeared that someone had taken large flour tortillas, wrapped them around some canned taco beef, poured some canned cheese sauce over it, heated it in the microwave, and served it. I have been eating Mexican food for many years. I have never had enchiladas made with flour tortillas. Corn is the norm and far better. No beans, rice, pico de gallo, or any other accompaniments were provided, although they were advertised as "combinations". We were not even given any chips and salsa as is typical in Texas Mexican restaurants before serving the meal. It would have been welcome as we waited for an hour even though there were few customers. I kept expecting John Quinones, from the "What Would You Do" TV show to appear and ask why we did not send the food back, as it was clearly substandard. Enrique is an interesting character and has a great line of bull and patter. If he cooked as well, it would have been great. There are numerous pictures of notables with him. The food must have been better then. Normally, I would have "called" him on this, but with kids and on a Sunday, I did not want to provoke a confrontation, as well deserved as it was! Enrique, I have owned a restaurant, and supervised other food service operations. If I had a cook who served a meal like this, they would be out of a job. I am wondering, "Was this some kind of a test to see if we would complain?" I should have. I know better. I am a retired Colonel, have been a boss of some sort most of my life, and do not normally tolerate substandard performance. I was tired after feeding 52 kids myself for the last three days, and just did feel like solving Enrique's problems and/or provoking a confrontation. The food must have been better in the past, "Enrique, Que Paso?"
We dined surrounded by statues and sombreros! It's a large place with lots of room between the tables so you do not feel cramped. The menu is cool...illustrating the food option with a photograph. You simply look a the picture, read whats on the plate and order with the corresponding number. I had the #28 and cannot remember exactly what was on it..but it was good. They offer a wide selection of cold beer and be sure to check out the treats available when you check out.

When we are in this area we come here. This is authentic Northern Mexican cooking.I usually order the daily special. Not 1 time have I been disappointed. I also get to try different foods. I have sent many friends here that travel to Mexico and they agree. Do yourself a favor and try it. Their horchata is very good. I recomend the trace lache cake to die for.
I met with five other men for breakfast. They are a covenant group of Emmaus men who meet here weekly and have done so for many years. We were promptly served and our orders were taken (theirs was their "usual"). The menu is very southwest and reasonable. I ordered coffee and an egg/bacon breakfast taco. My bill was less than $5. Leaving from San Antonio, Uvalde is two hours out on US 90. Los Alamos is a family owned restaurant with a great breakfast selection. I had the Huevos Rancheras, and my wife had the French toast - both were delicious! Service is friendly and fast. We were back on the road in 45 minutes. This was our second time eating here - we love the place!

We are originally from the Rio Grande Valley, so we definitely know authentic Tex-Mex, and this is authentic, and good. The price-for-value is so reasonable, and we left very satisfied. This is definitely a family operation - you can tell from the actions and conversation of the servers, and we felt confident everything would be taken care of, and it was. Huge menu, so pick a plate that has your favorites - you'll surely find one. No fancy here - just come for the food

We read the reviews and had to try it. If you are into family owned dives where the locals eat and tourist don't normally tread, you have to try the Live Oak Drive Thru. The tortilla soup is advertised as the best and I think they might be right. I've eaten a lot of tortilla soup in my life, my wife's is a "ten", but this really might be an "eleven". Also highly recommend the gorditas. A gordita is sort of a "pocket taco" stuffed with your choice of filling. We had the beef brisket and the carne guisada - both were absolutely fantastic. I have no idea how they get so much flavor in something you can hold in your hands. Things to note, there are only four tables, service is "casual" and they don't take credit cards. But worth the stop if you are in town.
