Morelia (Spanish pronunciation: [moˈɾelja]; from 1545 to 1828 known as Valladolid) is a city and municipality in the north central part of the state of Michoacán in central Mexico. The city is in the Guayangareo Valley and is the capital and largest city of the state. The main pre-Hispanic cultures here were the Purépecha and the Matlatzinca, but no major cities were founded in the valley during this time. The Spanish took control of the area in the 1520s. The Spanish under Viceroy Antonio de Mendoza founded a settlement here in 1541 with the name of Valladolid, which became rival to the nearby city of Pátzcuaro for dominance in Michoacán. In 1580, this rivalry ended in Valladolid’s favor and it became the capital of the colonial province. After the Mexican War of Independence, the city was renamed Morelia in honor of José María Morelos, who hailed from the city. In 1991, the city was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its well-preserved colonial buildings and layout of the historic center.

Hotel Juaninos' La Azotea Restaurant is famed for its dazzeling close-up views of the cathedral, amazing by day and magnificently illuminated at night. In a stylish setting of modern decor, the atmosphere is casual and service is welcoming and caring. La
The atmosphere is modern, but the views are all historic beautiful architecture. The view of the cathedral and the surrounding historic buildings adds an unbeatable experience to the outdoor seating and the indoor dining. There are huge glass windows which bring in light and the view. We had the almondine trout and the shrimp brochette with pineapple sauce. Both entrees were perfectly and elegantly prepared, and delicious. The bread service included herb butter and sesame seeded rolls. The sides of a myriad of vegetables and rice were delicious. The wine list was short but complete, and very affordable. The waitstaff were very attentive and patient with my merely moderate Spanish fluency. We also were seated and well attended at a very odd 5 pm ultra early dinner, without any drop in service, even with a kid in tow. As we enjoyed the setting, a Mom with three kids walked through to the outdoor patio for ice creams and an alcoholic beverage. What a dream. I think this location and its menu skew toward a sexy date more than a family meal, but the location and staff clearly can accommodate either, or even a business lunch. Simply Excellent.

The restaurant, open every day from 12:00 noon until midnight, offers cozy, quiet dining in a truly elegant setting, a setting where you can go in casual clothing or your best gala dress, where you can enjoy live music (even on the sidewalk) vetted by the
The lack of knowledge by the Hostess of the menu should have been a warning. She had trouble answering vegetarian questions. The enchiladas placeras without chicken were a disgrace to Michoacan: thick dry tortillas served with little sauce. Infinitely better in the local markets. The corundas were bland and languid. They brought carnitas instead of trout which made my guest wait while others ate. If you must eat here, eat inside as outside you are interrupted too many times by endless wandering merchants that are pushing what you donât want to hear or hold. I like giving but not when I am eating. The best part of the service was they gave us our check immediately so we could leave. I greatly preferred the food at the Libreria on the corner.

Had breakfast here twice and dinner once. Excellent find dining experience. The chilaquiles with chorizo were by far the best I've ever had. OMG! For dinner I had some amazing ribs that were to die for. A nice little wine list and some good mezcals. The service is excellent and the location is great, right under the portal (although you will be hassled by people selling marijuana cream, toys, maps, shirts, etc.).

Tata is a delightful restaurant where you can enjoy an artfully prepared, locally sourced lunch or dinner with an extensive offering of mezcals, beers and Mexican wines. We had a lovely ceviche and a plate of Enchiladas Morelianas with a refreshing glass of complementary Ãgua Fresca made from rice water, cloves and blackberries. A wonderful cup of carrot/beet soup also came free with the meal. We dined on their charming tree covered patio and will happily return for another thoughtfully prepared, delicious meal.

San Miguelito Restaurant is a place where the past and the present meet, where you learn with your eyes to read silently what words can not say ....
I love Mexican food but this restaurant serves outstanding Mexican food. Service was attentive and we'll skilled. They will also explain why all san Antonio's are upside down.We went here two nights in a row. While I never order salad at Mexican restaurants, I did order lechuga Azteca (4th one down). Best salad ever....Mexican or not. Do not miss this restaurant. I give it 5 stars!!

The Place2nd floor Skandinavian minimalist but stylish open concept with a terrace, in a quaint neighborhood of Morelia.Nice ambiance, plenty of natural light and a very comfortable feel. The Food.Eclectic, artisanal and delicious.I'm a big eater and a bit of a "foodie", so the extra homemade pita and tzatziki sauce(at no extra charge) for my delicious lamb kebab, was welcome!Shared two very appetizing & creative salads and a bottle of nice Argentinian wine with my wife, who also loved her chicken entree. Our dessert was paired with a complimentary local Artisanal cerveza, to finish our exquisite dinner. The ServiceImpeccable timing, friendly staff and owners in a home-like atmosphere, were everything flows smoothly. The owners Eddie and Alejandra are not only passionate about the food they serve, but also passionate about their customers. This was our first visit at Cielo. and In very little time we felt like we had known them all our lives. Great hosts! Can't wait to go back next February as we're planning to visit Morelia again for 3-4 days and also take a side trip to see the Monarch butterflies.Muy Agradable!!!
Where to eat American food in Morelia: The Best Restaurants and Bars
This restaurant is in a lovely setting and it has a fine view of Morelia. The food was spotty with only a couple of dishes that one could call excellent. We all particularly liked the shrimp carpaccio which was one of the best starters any of us had ever experienced. The pasta dishes had pasta that was properly cooked but each of the three were done with spaghetti with no finesse in choosing the right pasta for each specific sauce. The âfetuccini Alfredoâ has mixed with cotijaâ cheese and was a reinvention gone bad! I think the crema was Mexican crema, not cream. The sour cream flavor mixed with the cotija cheese tasted like a muddy mixture. We had ordered a particular white sparkling wine. And we were asked by the untrained waiter if we wanted it cold or at room temperature. ???? Duh! Sparkling wine at room remp, are you kidding??? Then we waited for 30 minutes or so while it was allegedly chilled. Then some manager came out and said we couldnât have that bottle and that we had to have the rose version of the same cecause they couldnât sell the white version at the menu price. So we waited another 30 minutes or so while they tried to chill the second bottle. Meanwhile our dinner was 2/3 over and we had no wine. So finally we cancelled the Rose and ordered the house white wine, which was sub standard at best and way over priced for the quality.Otherwise service was attentive and servers were plentiful. It is too bad they obviously had little training in fine dining. This place could be excellent with a manager that really had a training program to teach about wine service and a bit more finesse in the kitchen. I hope they do improve over time.
