We arrived early and thought our reservation might have been unnecessary. By 2100, however, it was humming. Our waiter spoke enough English - and we were provided with an English menu, to make an informed selection. Wine, pimientos padron and an egg, vegetable & shrimp salad started the meal — all fresh and nicely presented. They also brought an unordered plate of cheese, bread and sausage which appeared, as usual, on the final bill. The star was a huge dish for two “Arroz del Seniorita“ of seafood and rice in a thick broth. Seafood included lots of squid, mussels, scallops and shrimp. We’d no room left for the desserts that looked so tempting at the beginning. The only down side was a long wait for the rice to finish cooking for the main dish — albeit well worth it in the end.

Fogon Retiro Da Costina

Reviewed By TravelerNYNy

During the Christmas holidays, I had the pleasure to visit one of those little treasures where you feel welcome and not overwhelmed, where the owner tries to please you and make an experience that you will remember for years to come. O Retiro da Costina in Santa Comba is a secluded, hard to reach niche restaurant. Far from everything it deserves its very own detour. When facing the building, you expect nothing or hardly anything… But it is when Manuel greets you at the door, when you realize that this is a piece of Eden, hidden for you. We started with some anchovies at the basement, giving us time to enjoy the magnificent cellar. The anchovies were clean, less salty, meticulously damped in sweet Galician olive oil that we, as Manuel suggested, did not hesitate to taste with our bread… The chosen wine, a fruity happy Godello, went perfectly with our introduction to Manuel’s world. Upstairs, a big, square white table was waiting for us all. A mixture of minimalistic, rustic, Medieval décor and a touch of freshness received us at the table. First things first, we were offered a cup of hot consome made of galiña de Mos, a delicate serving in a flowery cup for a smooth, velvety welcome. Next came the xurelo afumado with vinegar perles paired with sparkling champagne, to follow with my favorite of all, an immaculate scallop in soft and crispy tempura with a refreshing lemon mousse. The pairing for the scallop was, this time, an incredible Ribeiro from A Teixa which, to my taste, was sufficiently consistent to pair light meats. The vegetables with egg and ham were themselves a great bridge to the last and most consistent plate: the hare caneloni. The meat was served with La Nieta and a bottle from la Viña de Andres, both excellent wines by themselves but even better when served with such an amazing food. Manuel was with us at all times, making recommendations, suggestions. He is a humble man that tries to please without interfering with the whole experience. After lunch, dessert was served by the pastry chef, a young man from Naron. The arroz con leche cream was superb, creamy, soft, perfectly sweet. The second dessert, mandarine ice cream with turron popcorn was surprising. Perhaps less keen on the presentation (it seemed to lack a coherent line) but perfect in flavor. Coffee came at the Cava and private smoking club. This area has been organized as an old Bristish club with a modern twist: white leather sofas, soft lights and an amazing collection of liqueurs and cigars. We had another bottle of champagne, this time a strong rose and drank the first coffee, made like in the fifties. An amazing show to end a very pleasant meal. The second coffee, stronger and, to my taste, richer, was followed by two amazing gin tonics that Manuel prepared in front of us. The area was clean, the air pure. You could hardly smell the cigars and, then, only the nice smell of good tobacco. When it comes to price, O Retiro da Costina is not a surprise: the selection of wines, the exquisite food, the lovely after-meal come with a price. But I would say that nobody leaves the restaurant without a smile on their faces, despite the price. A nice day, 5 hours well spent with family and friends. Good memories galore. Thanks, Manuel.

The lady servings was abrupt and most certainly not up to the task for dealing with guests. The food was mediocre, to say the least, and we heard a microwave in the background - most likely my fish dish which 'cooked' way too quickly to have been freshly made! As far as we were concerned, it was a wasted opportunity to sample a bit more of the wonderful local cuisine - we had based ourselves on some of the previous reviews but we now really wish that we had stayed in Santiago for our evening meal.

We were just lucky that this wonderful restaurant was located in our hotel, which itself was a jewel. My wife had the tuna and avocado salad. Fresh and delicious. I ordered the pork ribs, which was tender, flavorful and served with a delicious red wine reduction and apple puree. Scrumptious! White tablecloth service which was impeccable and the atmosphere in this 18th century building was a throwback (musically and atmospherically) to a classier, cooler, America in the 40's and 50's. Dean Martin era background music? Didn't see that coming. A great experience. Top recommendation

Although it was allready 21h, we were the only couple in the restaurant ( Spanish do eat late :-) ) but we were warmly welcomed by the waiter who took his time to advise us through the selection of excellent food and dito wine. The cuisson of the meat was perfect and the boss, who runs the kitchen, came a few times to our table to see if he could be of more assistance. The dessert was also a delight and completely homemade.I can really recommend this place to people who are looking for something different than the usual stuff you find in every bar or for really good wines all for normal prices. Hope I can go once more ! Keep up that good work chief !Thank you. We work hard for service the best dish in the best moment. Your opinion is the best think for dont change. We waiting your visit again.

This is an easy place to eat well for a good price and due to that fact it does become extremely busy. However if you have some time on your hands and fancy a late lunch or early dinner then arriving around 3.30 - 4 in the afternoon will likely get you a table without waiting. The menu itself is basic fayre however there is good choice which appears to alter on a weekly basis and the food is clearly fresh and well prepared. With a decent range of drinks and a friendly atmosphere this is easily much better than any of the nearby places.
