Reviews on Mediterranean food in Castro Urdiales, Cantabria, Spain. Castro Urdiales is a seaport of northern Spain, in the autonomous community of Cantabria, situated on the Bay of Biscay. Castro Urdiales is a modern town, although its castle and the Gothic-style parish church of Santa María de la Asunción, date from the Middle Ages. Its chief industries are tourism, fishing, and the preservation of fish, especially sardines and anchovies, in oil. The "Lolin" and "La Castreña" anchovy canning factories serve as a reminder of the town's closeness to this industry and its proximity to the sea.

We'd dined in the hotel restaurant on our last visit, and found it to be fine. However, we were disappointed this trip! The food was average, bland and not very tasty at all.We didn't bother to have dessert or coffees. The service was very good, as it is throughout the hotel, but it doesn't make up for pretty average dining!Hello Jhon D,We can only apologise for the problems that you have, and tell you that we try to improve everyday, we hope to recieve you in the future, and you will see how much we have improve.Best regards.Juan CasasCommunity Manager

Visited this restaurant three times whilst in Castro recently on a family holiday. Each time the food was excellent. It is situated a street back from the promenade and has relaxed atmosphere. The menu features local classics and always a good choice of very fresh local fish. We liked the sopa pescado (fish soup) and the Cocido Montanes (mountain stew) all served in huge portions for starters. On second courses everything was well cooked and always fresh. Local fish cooked perfectly. On most occasions we stayed with the menu of the day, but we had paella one night which was delicious and cooked to order. Drinks included in the set menu were healthy measures. My daughter asked for a vodka and coke and was very impressed! The restaurant is owned by Jose who is very friendly. Service is efficient and we both worked hard on improving our Spanish and English translation skills respectively. If you want local food at sensible prices I recommend.

We found this restaurant by accident. We took an exit on our way to Bilbao, drove around and came across this local restaurant. Wow! what an amazing experience! We could not speak Spanish, but the owner's wife spoke good English and made us feel welcomed and comfortable. The service as well as the food was excellent. Very reasonably priced. The owner was very friendly and respectful of us even though his English was not very fluent. They have a wine cellar at the back of the restaurant. We ended up buying some bottles wine in addition to enjoying a great lunch.

Location is good.service not ok and food not good.sat close to the Kitchen where the woman was criticising to the Chef about everything (we heard everything) she was wearing plastic gloves, Touching everything, reservation book, mobile phone and the food! Very poor service and Hygiene. The calamari dry and hard, the langostinos for 16 euro tasteless and hard as a shoesole... A shame

Been here several times for shellfish and octopus and itâs always the best! Everything is really fresh and very well prepared. Lots of variety ins shellfish and different styles of octopus. Ambience is casual but donât get fooled by that! The food is the best around!

We took a day trip to Castro Uridiales in search for some seafood and a nice Spanish Sunday lunch. We were greeted by unfriendly, rude and unhelpful restaurants that despite having free tables refused to take us. So we were left wondering around until we found Amarras. The waitress tried her hardest to accommodate us and she understood we were tired, hungry and disappointed. She was extremely helpful, and swiftly set a table for us and we ordered from the daily menu. The food was average but still good, I wouldn't go back for the food, but I know they have a more extensive menu ordinarily which I assume is quite good. What really made the experience was the waitress and her friendly service. I dont think I would ever go back to Castro Uridiales, it reminds me of a cheap seaside resort, but it might be different in the high season summer months. If you find yourself here, do pop in to Amarras as you will for sure be welcomed with a smile not a frown like all the other places recommended her on trip advisor.

This is a small restaurant so it is recommended to book. We went for an early dinner (by Spanish standards) so it was quite quiet. There was no menu and we were recommended the sea bass. We did not want any starters but the owner brought us a little taster plate of calamares which was superb. The sea bass was the biggest I have ever seen and tasted amazing. Before leaving we were given a couple of digestivos - a nice friendly touch. Donât go to Castro Urdiales without visiting La Arboleda.
