We used this service between IIyama Shinkansen station to Nozawa Onsen village. It costs 600Y one way and is a good service. It drops you at the Chuo bus terminal at Nozawa and you must buy a ticket from the machine in advance.

The Toyoma Chiho Railway was formed in 1943 when various lines around Toyama were merged together into the current (Private) Railway Company. Early one morning, I traveled from Dentetsu Toyama to Tateyama as the 1st leg of a journey on the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. Departing just before 08:00, the 'Double Decker Express' in use on the the Tateyama Line takes about 50-min to cover the 34km to Tateyama Station and the interchange with the Tateyama Cable Car. The unique feature of this 3-car scenic train is the two-deck passenger car (Car 2) located in the centre, previously in use on the Keihan Electric Railway around Osaka/Kyoto. Note that seats in Car 2 should be reserved in advance. As the train 'rattles and rolls' through the countryside before climbing towards Tateyama, it is performing the prologue to what was to be a magical journey on the Alpine Route.
