Bistrot with the tipic soul of a typical osteria and rivisited traditional dishes. We are in Piazza Sordello, in the Heart of Mantua.
House made pastas were good, say 6/10. Second worst tagliata di manzo I have had anywhere in Italy. Meat was DRY (hard to do with rare beef) and tough. Mostly tasteless, could really have used a good drizzle of balsmico. Patate al forno were too dry to eat, where was ketchup when you needed it! I'd say go antipasti and a pasta. Ho house or half bottles of wine, glass or full bottle, limited selection. Looking for another place for tomorrow.

We found this restaurant totally by accident - entering on the charm of its garden on a fairly busy road. What great food! Local specialities, flawlessly cooked and well presented. And the service was friendly (in English) and informative. The manager is totally enthusiastic about his town. We ate in the garden in good weather, but the inside rooms were varied and quirky and stylish. A couple of days later, we deliberately returned for lunch and were greeted as old friends. Totally recommended - very good food at reasonable prices. Thanks for your feedback and we hope to see you again.

This was another simple but enjoyable Emilian lunch in pleasant surroundings and with excellent service. The starter was a pasta dish with a Rabbut ragu. The main was a beef stew with a beautifully rich sauce and tender meat. Finally, the dessert was a type of creme caramel with a sweet cold custard sauce. All very tasty and washed down with plenty of a local Cabernet. Good quality all round!

The Osteria al Raneri is a small, charming, and welcoming place. It is clear that its owners pour a great deal of love into their establishment. I usually do not eat a lot of beef. But this night I had a hankering for a steak and was served one of the tastiest and largest pieces of beef I have every seen at a very reasonable price. A place to be recommended but it is very popular and a reservation is necessary.

We had a lovely Sunday lunch at Giallozucca, a very pretty restaurant hidden away in a courtyard in central Mantova. The owner recommended a Pinot Grigio from Friuli and it was perfect with my Pumpkin Tortellini. My husband had very well-flavoured grilled beef and cubed, roasted potatoes. We had traditional choices as we are only in Mantova for a short time and wanted to eat local dishes but the menu had many non-traditional touches worth trying such as some Asian touches and ingredients. Food at other tables looked delicious. The owner was most hospitable and fun with very good English. Service was very professional and a small, complementary starter of pumpkin soup a nice touch. The bill was a most reasonable 35 Euros.

Located a short walk from the city centre, this Osteria offers traditional food fare with fresh ingredients locally sourced. Well frequented by locals and highly recommended for visitors the variety of dishes may not impress but flavours and size will definitely leave the visitors satiated and happy. Staff is friendly and efficient and will accommodate slight variations of your preferred choice of pasta shapes and sauces. Important: due to its popularity, it is recommended to book a table in advance.

We came here for lunch. The inside of the resto looks nice and there was plenty of people. That is a good sign ! The adress was recommended by my french guide : Le guide du Routard. Another good resto in Italy ! They have plenty and quiet a lot are very affordable. The list was only in Italian and also the waitress was very authentic. We like that ! Resto's with plenty of locals who appreciate good food ! My wife had carpaccio di manzo ( beef ) and I had a realy good pasta with nice grano padano as much as I wanted. We had half a liter of tasty red wine ( valpolicella ), a bottle of mineral water and 2 cappucino's. We payed less than 50 euros ! I recommend this very authentic osteria......

This was our favourite meal experience in Mantua and one of the best meals I've ever eaten in Italy. It's about twenty minutes' walk from the city centre and the place seemed to be full of locals and regular diners.  We loved everything about this place: the gentleman who looked after our table (who I believe was Carlo, the owner), was so warm and friendly and had such pride in the restaurant and the food they were serving. We were seated outside on the garden patio and enjoyed the most exquisite food, absolutely made with love. I ordered the steamed pumpkin flowers stuffed with ricotta as an antipasto and it was divine. I savoured every mouthful very slowly. The presentation was also fabulous - one of the nicest dishes I ate over the entire trip. My husband had the 'spaghetti alla chitarra' with crispy culatello for his starter which was also excellent. For my main I went for ravioli filled with aubergine and a soft Italian goat's cheese with cherry tomatoes and basil. My husband opted for their pork dish, cooked at a low temperature and served with Dijon mustard and apples caponata. Both dishes were close to perfect. We couldn't fit in a dessert unfortunately but we had a nice bottle of Valpolicella from the Veneto.Everything about the place suggests a high-end restaurant - except the prices that is. My starter was â¬10 and our pasta dishes from â¬12 -â¬14.  They also offer the option of a half portion of pasta for about â¬8 - such a great idea as it allows you to try three courses without being completely stuffed to the gills. The surprise here was that the pork dish was also only â¬14. Excellent value overall. One of my favourite things about this place was the motto on their menu - "We do not charge cover - your presence here is a great pleasure for us". It certainly felt like that and we were treated like kings. One to revisit in the future for sure.Â

"Al Torchio" Bigoleria is inspired at the ancient Italian taverns, where you could find tipical homemade pasta with traditional flavors and of course good wine. You'll find selected cheeses, cocktails and beers. Do not forget the sweets! WELCOME!!
Interesting... a place that specialises in Bigoli: a type of thicker spaghetti from the Vicenza area in Veneto but also eaten in eastern Lombardy. We came to visit Mantova and were looking for a place to eat something regional... and then this place caught my eye. Right from the initial phone call to book a table the people were very friendly. This place serves antipasti of salumi or cheese and Bigoli. You choose your sauce. They also have dessert, but that is it. We had a board of salumi (salame, pancetta and speck) that was delicious. Very good quality ingredients followed by the bigoli. The Carciofi and Pancetta Peppata sauce (artichokes and peppery bacon) was delicious as was the Radicchio and Monte Veronese (radicchio lettuce and a cheese from Verona) although this was bitter and a very adult taste which might not suit everybody. The service was quick and friendly: genuine smiles that warmed your heart. As a last tip: do check the toilet out. Beautifully done! ;-)An excellent place for an unrefined but very tasty meal. Hope to go back to Mantova for longer and who knows... a second visit!
Where to eat Mediterranean food in Porto Mantovano: The Best Restaurants and Bars

I can be short, we came here based on the superb 5 star votes on tripadvisor and we got the worst food of our holdays in Italy. The chicken was rock hard and extermely dry, the sauce that goes with tasteless, the winter salad that was served with it presented without any care. My partner ordered a pasta with meat that was of mediocre taste. Nobody dared to talk normally because of the poor acoustics in the place and lack of background music. The owner of waiter who served us was honest, since I returned the chicken we did not have to pay for that dish.
