we wanted to eat beef and this place was close to the Tsuruoka train station, and reviews seemed to be ok, so what elsethey have menus with pictures, very useful for japanese-less tourists like us, although not in English, but one of the waiters was able to answer our questions and requests, which can be summarized in just one: we don't want to eat tongue (although it looks yummy)you sit in a table and they bring you a portable fire so you cook (burn) your own foodwe ordered with no limits, kimchi, vegetables (to be also grilled), two different types of beef, and spicy noodles, ask for level three of spicy if you dare, with two large expensive beerseverything was excellent and fun, very recommendable!!!

The vegetarian meal we were served was excellent. The old warehouse setting and decor was lovely. A full moon shone on us to top off the evening. A real treat.

This place is worth your time, despite basic appearances. The lunchtime rush is evidence enough.Nice variety, well prepared, and fair prices (with any easy plate coding system). You won’t regret it. We went before heading to the aquarium, which was wise because we would have been less inclined afterward :)

Super Japanese Izakaiya right near Tsuruoka station. Doesn't look much from the outside but it's a big bar/restaurant selling national and local food and drinks. Many fish dishes but other options too. Great quality food in a friendly atmosphere. Clean and bright. Highly recommended. English translation on the menus, not much English spoken but they'll make your visit works out all the same.

This is a shojin ryori restaurant. We had the lunch set. It was 1,200 yen or so. All of the food served contains no fish, meat or dairy. The mountain vegetables and various kinds of tofu seasoned with mustard, sugar, walnuts, peanuts, soy, vinegar and rice dressed with ginger and Japanese herbs are crunchy and simply delicious. I was full up and could hardly finish the last bit. The meal comes with green tea and we enjoyed eating on tatami matsuri that beautiful view through the hand thrown glass windows.
