Try to book the experience. You will be able to have the hand-on experience of pulling somen (separating somen into thinner threads by hands). It is extremely fun. More importantly, you can experience this special Japanese culture.One-day advance booking by phone call is required. You may need a Japanese friend to help with your booking.

We had dinner at Nonoka during our stay in Shodoshima. It was a superb dining experience. We thoroughly enjoyed the delightful ambience in the chalet with extensive wooden decor, as well as all dishes of the omakase set menu. There were totally 9 courses - starter, steamed egg pudding, shashimi, pork, fish, tempura, beef, congee, dessert. Every dish was heartfully prepared by the chef and very delicious. Definitely worth a visit. Reservation is a must. We booked 3 months in advance. Please note that the GPS did not direct us to the restaurant. We were in the middle of the road (driving from east to west) when the GPS told us we had reached the destination. Driving guide from our experience: do not attempt to turn right on the 2 footpaths which seem to lead to the restaurant for they are too narrow; move further until you see a driveway on which a wooden sign with the restaurant's name "éä¹è±" stands; turn right; go straight until you see the restaurant. There is a private parking lot behind the restaurant.

Amazing herb garden behind gift shop. Gift shop has great ice-cream and great souvenirs. Amazing public bath on the top of the building. The food not the best at the restaurant. Overall great!

My wife and I cycled to Nakabuan to try out somen noodle making and sample our creation. We called the same morning and were able to reserve a spot at lunch time. Due to the location, we could also combine this with our visit to the Yamaroku shoyu factory, which worked out great as they are less than 5 minutes away (about 10 minutes walking). It cost 1000 yen for the tour and noodle lunch, which was more than worth it. The guy running the tour was funny and informative, and definitely passionate about somen. He understood some very basic english, but if you know Japanese this will be much more enjoyable. Still, you can follow along with images and probably understand the basics. Making the noodles was a little stressful, but really fun and actually quite a simple process. We took loads of photos and had a great time! Lunch was a big bowl of fresh somen with sauce and some toppings - very simple but delicious. We would absolute recommend this activity to others.
