This restaurant serves two main dishes at lunchtime - GYUUDON (beef or rice) and YAKINIKU-TEISHOKU (beef set meal, bbq the meat at your table). I recommend the set meal as you get to try different cuts of meat, fresh vegetables, locally grown rice and miso soup...and the best part, is you get to cook your meal at your table!!!The restaurant is also open in the evening, but prices are much more expensive...so plan your day around lunch here maybe? (Closed: Wednesday)The friendly staff will do their best to serve you.

If you like Japanese food and want to enjoy a drink with local people, visit this family-run bar/cafe. They have an English menu!
if you want to try freshly made sushi, visit this restaurant run by Hiroshi-san.He makes all the sushi himself, and sometimes even goes fishing for the ingredients!I recommed having the "OMAKASE" (chef special of the day) - 3500yen per person. You need to make a booking for this restaurant.

I enjoyed sushi-teishoku (nigiri sushi, tempura, miso soup and side dishes) for my lunch, then went back for dinner and enjoyed eriyaki-nabe (spicy fish broth, made the local way). This is a family-fun restaurant attached to Hotel Oki very close to Beppu Port. They have an English menu!
By chance Donkey was the first place we've hit after entering the island. It is a simple little place right next to the ferry, but with a very good atmosphere. The women working here are all super friendly. We tried the Miso Ramen (750 yen) and the special Oki Curry with seafood (750 yen). Both were delicious. So we came back the next day for another Miso Ramen and a Soy Ramen (680 yen). Again very good. A clear recommendation!
I was told to try "sazae-don" (turban shell on rice) by the locals, so I visited this restaurant for lunch. I am not a huge fan of shellfish, but this dish was very tasty. My friends chose other dishes (tempura udon, turban shell curry, karaage) and were very satisfied. The owner was very friendly. The chef also came and talked with us. The menu has photos which helps you to understand what you are ordering.
