What a great guy. He made such a genuine attempt to converse and take the time to talk about his restaurant, food, and the area. i would have loved to have dined there and spent more time sharing a Chianti with him. So without having experienced the cuisine I know the experience alone would be fantastic! When I arrived in the afternoon he was standing outside just like in one of the pictures...almost like it was staged.

Close to Kyu-Karuizawa, nice decor etc, but the waitress was miserable. Pasta quality good, but portions too small. Pizza maybe a better option.

We stopped by at Karuizawa Vegibier for lunch. Like their name which I think has a French word in it âgibierâ which literally means game meat, this restaurantâs staffs are very creative, they have excellent attention to details, the vegetables were very fresh and the cheese fondu which came with cooked vegetables was a delight. The herbal teas were also good. In a very cold Karuizawa, this restaurant was a good stop.

We were badly looking for a Indian restaurant around Karuizawa, but all our effort went in vein. Finally we found this Italian restaurant which saved our day. Pizzas were pretty good, price was moderate. Overall not a bad visit at all.

Excellent food. I little bit expensive. The lunch salad includes some red snapper sashimi. That was unexpected. Didn't try the pizza so can't review that. The pasta was very good. Just a little pricey.

The restaurant is in Harunireterrace in Hoshino Area. I ordered a pasta course at night. The course includes salad, hors d'oeuvre, pasta, dessert and coffee/tea. Each dish was good. I was disappointed at the atmosphere inside. The restaurant is surrounded by green but I could not see the good landscape at all once I entered. When a group of families came in, the restaurant became very noisy. The atmosphere was far from what I expected. In addition, I was very disappointed at a staff who took order. I ordered a course, but she asked twice whether I want a course or not. I ordered coffee but she brought tea.

The food is French and beautifully prepared. The service is first rate. The wines are fine. The outlook is Lake New Town gardens which are lovely. What more could a tired traveller ask for? It's a fair hike from town (far too far to walk, though it can be cycled). Compared to other restaurants in Karuizawa this is arguably the best. The lunch menu (three courses) is not expensive. Bon apetit.

This place, right across from the art museum (go around back for the entrance), is a neat little alternative to the usual Japanese fare -- and yet it's still quite Japanese. Japanese-style pizza is its own speciality, and you can go half-half to try flavors such as "Japanese pickles" and anchovies/cheese. It's a real treat. Also, the enormous fresh salad is worth the trip alone. Staff speaks English and there's an English menu.

Some of the cheeses are good, some not so, but EVERYTHING is EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE !!!The woman that works there has a cold attitude. No free tasting, but if she feels that you are most likely to buy, she will give you some to taste, otherwise, not !!The goat cheese is very good, the rest, I did not find so good. The Camembert cheese, is certainly not that good, but the prices it is a big WOW... At almost a $150 per Kg. it is by far, the most expensive cheese shop, I have ever seen anywhere in the world !!Have to admit, the black goat cheese is really good and it was on a 30% discount, so I bought a small one (well, they have only small ones), otherwise, regular prices, I would not buy. A few years ago, bought the Camembert cheese to try it. It was no good and very expensive, so I am not falling to the same trap twice. If you want to buy something, I recommend the goat cheeses. Good quality, for those.

Manpei Hotel is where Karuizawa's modern history began and they make sure you know it. I'm not sure how many famous people have eaten in this dining room, but it certainly has a historical feeling to it, and I mean that mostly in a good way. Service was excellent, although the fact that we were the only customers lunching on a day in early April may have made the waiters extra attentive. We went for a lunch course with grilled lamb chop and an a-la-carte beef curry. The curry is famous here, and this is not your ordinary beef curry, but several tender, perfectly cooked chunks of beef served with a rich curry sauce on the side. Unusual and tasty. The lamb chop was served a bit rare and was very tasty. Lunch course includes a small fresh salad and a dessert. Not cheap... the curry by itself was around 3000 yen and the lunch course around 5000, but not unreasonable. Only complaint was that the food was rather on the heavy side; you might want to explore other options if you are looking for a light lunch.
