This one-of-a-kind restaurant offers counter service, a small banquet room, and hot meal delivery to nearby Fukushima Medical University (FMU). As such, Harunoya has also become a favorite of international medical students doing rotations at FMU, as well as international graduate students in PhD programs. My connection to Harunoya goes back to 2009, when FMU's professor and chair of biochemistry took me here for an evening meal. Since then, I've become a regular, like many other members of FMU's medical, research, and teaching staff. The Great East Japan Earthquake of 11 March 2011 knocked out Fukushima City's municipal water supply for a week, and also interrupted Harunoya's city gas line. Haruo (æ¥ç·, the proprietor, from whom the name Harunoya = æ¥ã®å± = The Spring Room is derived) took me aside and said, "Look, with no running water or gas, we're out of business for a while. But you come here every night and sit at our family table." So, I cannot claim to be a completely impartial reviewer. Not just Harunoya, but Fukushima's entire food infrastructure was interrupted in March, 2011. We were living mostly on rice balls at FMU, and still having daily university-wide emergency response meetings when Harunoya was able to re-open. Someone drew the kanji for meat (è) on the blackboard, made the announcement, and that news on an otherwise somber day was greeted with hearty applause. So, yes, it's not just my opinion. Harunoya has a loyal following.
