This popular resort town is located just a mile from Windermere Lake, the largest lake in England and alleged home to more than one peculiar sea creature. If we've scared you out of skiing, boating and fishing in Windermere Lake, there's always horseback riding and golf. Or you can explore the lake from the safety of a ferryboat, which regularly takes passengers from Hawkshead to Bowness.

This was our 4th visit to the Windermere boutique hotel and it didn't disappoint. We stayed in the Sweetheart Suite and it was amazing. Everything was spotlessly clean. Breakfast was really good and we didn't need any lunch. Staff were really friendly and helpful and are a credit to the hotel. (Richard should be so proud of them). It was just perfect, a lovely treat from my husband, we will definitely be going back, as there are 4 rooms left we've not stayed in. I would give it 10 stars or more if the option was available.

Built in 1854 as a private country house retreat, the hotel now provides luxurious accommodation, with stunning suites and double rooms all individually interior designed with locally hand-made furniture. Offer a fantastic breakfast featuring the best local produce such as Cumberland Sausage, Bacon and Lancashire black pudding. (gluten free options also available). Also offering a quintessential Afternoon Tea, a must for all visitors. Cedar Manor is an ideal base for those wishing to relax and enjoy the breathtaking scenery, wonderful walks and wealth of leisure facilities Windermere and the Lake District National Park have to offer. Set in mature walled gardens dominated by the ancient cedar tree, the hotel feels peaceful and secluded, yet is just a short stroll away from the shores of Lake Windermere and the centre of Windermere village.
We have just returned from a fantastic stay at Cedar Manor over the Jubilee weekend. The hotel grounds are immaculate and the room (Bowness) clean and well-equipped. Fresh milk and chocolates were a nice addition to the room too. The bed was also very comfortable - perfect after a day's walking in the fells! We found the hotel to perfectly located, just a 10 minute walk from the lake and a paddleboarding/Kayaking centre. It was also a short stroll into Windermere on an evening, were we dined at some absolutely brilliant restaurants (Hooked and San Pietro). The breakfasts at the hotel also deserve a special mention, particularly the pancakes with bacon which were truly exceptional and were ordered every day of our stay! Caroline and Jonathan were very welcoming, gracious hosts and clearly take a lot of pride in providing the best stay possible for their guests. We always found them to be helpful and understanding (even when my gf accidentally set off the fire alarm at 11.30pm ? ...So sorry!!!) Thanks for a lovely stay. A true gem of a hotel and we would love to return again at some point in the future! A&L

Stayed here as part of a honeymoon. After staying elsewhere it was great to go here in a hot tub suite for 3 nights. The suites are amazing and all the staff are friendly, helpful and know the local area if you want advice on walking or trips. The hotel has a great location close to local bars and restaurants and parking is easy which can not always be said of accommodation in the area. Dinner and breakfast are first class. Also it was the first trip post covid restrictions for me and the work done by the staff in Applegarth puts you at ease. Can't wait to go back !!

First time back after 2 years, I was a little concerned that things may have changed, however, the service from all staff was excellent, friendly and helpful, rooms lovely and comfortable with great views. Breakfast was freshly cooked with a good variety, tasty sausages and bacon too. The evening meal consisted of canapes, soup, sorbet, main course and dessert. Served in a timely manner and well prepared. I see some reviews mention the decor, it has never been a problem for me as the hotel is clean and relaxing, there really is nothing wrong with the way it is decorated, in fact I miss the old worn leather setee as it was so comfortable. Had a lovely anniversary break and have already booked for next year.

Very nice hotel between Windermere and Bowness on a bit of a hill so you do need to be prepared for an uphill walk back. Room was a good size and modern enough with good bathroom, carpet was in need of changing as it had a few stains that some effort had been made to try and remove. Breakfast and evening meals were very good, with good options, well presented and good service, there are a few nice areas to sit with pre/after dinner drinks. All in a lovely weekend experience with lovely views.

At the heart of Gilpin is a very passionate family and team, dedicated to creating lasting memories for their guests, who return time and again for celebrations and escapes. Warmth and friendliness are balanced with extraordinary service, exquisite décor and stunning culinary experiences. This five star hotel comprises two separate estates in the beautiful Lake District, with a luxury country house on each. At Gilpin Hotel all of the 25 bedrooms have lovely Lakeland views, most leading directly onto the gardens - including six Garden Suites with their own cedarwood hot tubs, and five fabulous detached Spa Lodges. The Spa Lodges were added in 2016, and are cedar-clad with king size beds, gorgeous bathrooms and a fabulously private en-suite spa each, with a convertible treatment area, steam room, rain maker shower, free standing oval stone bath, outdoor sauna and hydrotherapy hot tub surrounded by a walled garden. Add this to the mood lighting, fires, electric blinds and a state-of-the-art music system, and all of the senses are invigorated. Just a mile away at Gilpin Lake House, six gorgeous rooms share a fully staffed boutique hotel with a heated indoor swimming pool (for Lake House guests only), outdoor hot tubs and saunas, and exclusive access to 100 acres of grounds with a stunningly beautiful private lake. Our chauffeurs bring you to the hotel in the evening to dine. Dine in either the Michelin starred main restaurant, 'Hrishi', where Hrishikesh Desai combines great Lake District produce and classic methods to deliver unbelievable textures and flavours with just a twist of Asia, or in 'Gilpin Spice' a new informal restaurant transcending international boundaries, with an open kitchen focussing on dishes from the spice trail spanning the Indian sub-continent, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, Japan and China.
Stayed for a special occasion and the staff were all welcoming and well briefed of the occasion. Stayed in the lake house and the pool and hot tub was fantastic. Car laid on to take us to the main hotel for dinner. Faultless!

We have just come back from from staying at the Briery Wood with our cocker spaniel Rusty. They made us all very welcome. We stayed in garden room 1 which had a super king bed in it and considering pets are allowed in the room it was impeccably clean. Dogs are allowed everywhere in the hotel apart from the restaurant. Because of this we had our breakfast in the bar area which was equally as comfortable. The breakfast itself was more than adequate, and nice and warm when it came. All staff were very friendly and welcoming. The hotel itself is centrally located and within easy walking distance to Brockhole on Windermere where you can catch the boat to Ambleside or Bowness. There is loads to do there for the kids or just walking the dog. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will definitely be back. Rusty also said thank you for the treats you left for him.
