From the exterior, it seemed like a nice resort but were shocked when we saw the room. It was was a very run-down with stains on the carpet and wallpaper. The inside of the rooms felt like an old hospital. All of the furniture was very old and it seemed like I was in the 1970s. The view from the room was nice, but I would definitely not recommend this resort.

Our visit to this hotel was filled with unexpected twists. We booked plane tickets months ago as a couple, 2 adults getaway from kids. We didn't plan to visit any onsen as it was summer afterall. Then, when I started booking hotels, the "Visit Kyushu" campaign came out and onsen hotel prices were slashed. I figured the prices were worthwhile just for the meals. So we booked this hotel for a night. Just days after I completed the booking and prepaid, my kids' caregiver suddenly told me she wanted to go back to her home country. While I pleaded with her to stay and reasoned with her she must give us some time to find a new caregiver, I had to make a contingency plan. I asked the hotel if I could bring my kids. The hotel was kind and allowed it. So our couples getaway became a family trip. Which is fine. We enjoy a family trip as much. When we arrived at the hotel, we were asked to remove our shoes at the hotel entrance. This may sound odd to you, but this is the reason I asked the hotel then and there if there is vacancy for one more night. I figured the owners love their property so much they are not afraid of the trouble of managing so many shoes. This hotel cannot be bad. A staff member quoted me the original price. I said that's way too expensive and asked if I could pay the "Visit Kyushu" campaign price for the additional night. The staff asked the owner to come out of her office to talk to me and the owner agreed. I pulled out my wallet and the owner said no need please pay me when you check out. The hotel assigned us Room 201 which was huge. In addition to the Japanese section, there was the Western section in the room with the sofa. We loved it. They served dinner inside the room. Which means our kids could walk around when they get bored with the long formal dinner. Breakfast was served downstairs. Food was delicious and service was great. Except for the waitress in the first night who got impatient since we could not speak Japanese and we had a hard time communicating. Maybe there is no other guest in our wing ... The hotel provided no air-conditioning AT ALL in the hallways outside our room and outside onsens. The onsen on Level 1 was so hot (I mean the air) that I couldn't stay after 15 minutes. The onsen on Level 4 was a little better. No outdoor onsen. There was also no fresh air supply in our room. It got so stuffy that I got a flu after staying 2 nights. We could hardly see another guest in the hotel. So we figured business was quite slow. No wonder there's a campaign to attract more visitors. The big surprise came the second day. When we finally got our kids ready to go out and asked for our shoes at reception, the owner's daughter was waiting for us. She asked "do you want to stay another night?" I said "yes, already agreed with another lady I spoke to last night." She then told us we needed to pay original price. Why? Because "my mother made a mistake." Well, if you told us this earlier (actually we did see her when she gave us detailed directions to Mifuneyama last night), we wouldn't have unpacked and would live out of our suitcase. Can you please give us a discount then? The lady finally did give us a discount. But the price was still 50% above what I originally agreed with the mother. I come to Japan again and again because I hold the Japanese hospitality business in the highest regard. Never have I encountered a person in the Japanese service industry who breaks a promise. Don't get me wrong, there was no anger, no harsh words exchanged with the daughter. I am just disappointed. When we checked out, the mother was there to apologize for her mistake and give us a pack of coffee.

Location of the hotel is strategic, just right behind the JR station. 10-minutes walk to the Sakuramon and the public bath, 20-minutes walk to the Takeo Shrine and Public Library. The bus terminal heading to Ureshino is just next to the hotel. We understand that the hotel is under renovation now and there will be a public onsen in the new building. For the hardware, the room is extremely small even for two Asians, and shown clear signs of wear and tear. However, all basic amentities are available for the guests, just like other hotels did - toiletries, fridge, yukata, slippers, writing desk, TV etc. What make this hotel so different from others is the software, the staff and their customer-focused attitude: I stayed there on 2 April 2018 and the temperature was unexpectedly hot, around 25-6C. The cooler of the central air-con was unable to function and only the heater was on. I mentioned to the receptionists (who spoke fluent English) and they took every effort to adjust the thermostat in my room so that the cooler could work. Just to mention some more examples, for better hair washing experience, they have shampoo bar in the lobby for guests to sample (unseen anywhere in Japan); the price for washer/dryer per cycle is the cheapest that I've seen Kyushu (same brand of washer & dryer); sumptuous breakfast with a wide range of food & beverages free of charge; comic library (all books in Japanese though); very detailed walking map of Takeo town and the location of each convenience store etc. Very impressive hotel. If the hardware can be improved, I believe it will be one of the best value hotels in Kyushu.

Convenient Location. Close to famous histrical place of Onsen 100 years ago. Also only 5minutes drive from main station. But Onsen (Bath) is not worth traveling. There are only 2baths (indoor/outdoor) then one is too hot and the other one is not hot enough. They don't serve meals to rooms. You have to go to dinning room. Severs are not professional. (a few were good but mostly not good) We stayed 2nd floor. It was very noisy due to big noises from kitchen (maybe..)

The hotel is located at Mt. Mifuneyama, there is no bus service from the Takeo Onsen station to the hotel, however, free pick up service is available by making an advance reservation with the hotel. The hotel is a 3 storey building with no elevator. The lobby staff helped us to move our luggage to the room after we check in. Upon entered to the room, we were asked for the choice of drink, we chose the hot lemongrass milk tea which tasted really good. There was some Japanese snacks served in the room too. The room was clean, spacious and cozy, the tatami mat was very comfortable. Our room was at the end of the corridor so the wifi connection was very poor in the room. We stayed here for a night with dinner & breakfast plan, my friend helped me to inform the hotel for a vegetarian meal plan and the request was well taken care of. They served the traditional Japanese food that came with a few course with beautiful presentation and the food taste quite good. The admission to the Mifuneyama Rakuen Garden is free for hotel guests. We went there twice during our stay to enjoy the day and night view of the beautiful garden. Definitely worth it~

I’ve been to many ryokans in my life but this is by far the best I’ve stayed at. The family is incredibly kind and attentive, the atmosphere is wonderful, and if you like kaiseki this is the best you’ll get. It was incredibly delicious, particularly the beef and the oyster tempura. If you can get one of the three rooms with an attached outdoor onsen. It is very much worth the cost and will make you never want to leave your room.

I actually stayed here in Feb 2020. zone of my last holidays abroad before Covid. It's taken me this long to review!, but I still remember my stay very fondly. Hitomi -San is very friendly and kind. Not much English is spoken verbally but she is very attentive via chat app. The house is gorgeous but it is very far from Takeo Main Station without a car. Definitely hire a car because the bus schedule is very infrequent. 2 to 3 hours, and about 3 times a day, then you have to walk to the house. The breakfast was so delicious and delightful. I recommend staying here, and would again if I had a chance to visit Takeo again...but next time with a car! If you include meals with your booking, we'll I would highly recommend you do, because the food is fantastic !
