My husband and I first met the owner Yosuke Kanehira at his wonderful cafe in Nagano who introduced us to his amazing lodge in the mountains Redwood Lodge. This was totally paradise for us, situated in a charming ski village alongside. Log fires, wonderful warm bedrooms with futon style bedding+ loo + hand basin, a balcony overlooking the snow.. the most amazing lounge/dining room with log fires.... bliss. We were met by Yosuke's partner Japanese chef with his charming wife from Taiwan and we were thoroughly spoilt with the most amazing cuisine for dinner. A three course meal and we couldnt have wished for better! Yosuke joined us for dinner and so sweetly gave my husband a massive bottle of sake for his birthday! .... We thoroughly enjoyed the fabulous communal spa bathroom, totally refreshing and delightful. A cooked breakfast which was included in the price was amazing. The Chef specialises in making all of his own produces some smoked..A true professional! We seriously didnt want to leave and this was one of the highlights of our holiday in Japan. We were the only guests, no tourists and we were thoroughly spoilt. The views over the ski village are incredible... English was spoken by the Chef's wife and Yosuke speaks fluent English having lived and worked in Australia for a period of time. Getting there: We didnt find it too easy getting there in the dark and were not able to contact Yosuke that particular day so we ended up taking a taxi from Nagano which cost in the region of $100-$150 Austraian dollars (apologies cant quite remember).. money well spent in our opinion because we were greeted and were delighted with our stay! Chef and his wife kindly drove us down to the nearest village the following day to catch the train from a small town. It was an experience of a lifetime, we didnt want to leave and will return for sure. Thank you Yosuke, Chef and his wife for sharing your time and experiences with us, it was a precious experience.

Our Ryokan is located in Japanese deep countryside. There is so quiet,Onsen make your body keep warm. We will arrange precious time to you!
What an amazing stay! I wasn’t sure about traveling due to covid but they made sure that guests can enjoy the stay safely. All the hot springs except the large public one was reserved and private. Great to have a beautiful tub all to yourself. Food was great too and was served in a private room. Social distancing wasn’t an issue at all. Service was great too, and they really went above and beyond to offer safe and enjoyable stay during the pandemic.

Hear slight splash from stream in Matsukawa Keikoku (Canyon), sniff scent from breeze for jiggling trees, listen to song of birds who tell transition of season to next season, Feel healing with “Onsen” (Hot spring) which has been welling up since more than 210 years ago. Fujiiso Ryokan is orthodox as well as traditional Japanese style Ryokan standing still in countryside of mountainous area, which renowned writers and artists like Ogai Mori, Tekkan & Akiko Yosano, Kan Kikuchi, Yaichi Aizu, etc. have loved to stay. Feel and stay here luxuriously with nothing else to do wallowing in the 72 climates of the year and dynamic as well as exquisite transition of Sinshu.
A very small mountain village in a steep narrow valley. Entrance at the top of the inn, and rooms built down along a cliff. Panoramic view of the mountain across the valley. Very nice onsen bath and kaiseki dinner and full Japanese breakfast. Small, high quality Japanese ryokan (inn). Maybe 20 rooms. Impeccable service. Greeted outside upon arrival and tea & sweets served as you view the mountain across the valley while checking in. A very quiet adult getaway. We visited the public bath a minute walk on the second day morning. Apparently an over 100 year old building with much charm and tradition. The Takayama winery near by offers spectacular views. Domaine Sogga in Obuse offers rare wines that you can only buy at the winery. Arguably one of the best wines made in Japan, with a cult following. Many European wine enthusiasts at the winery. For generations the family produced sake, and now also making wines from European grape varietals farmed in Obuse. Rare varietals usually for blending such as petit manseng made into single varietal wine. The winery is the former 'kura' that produced sake.

There are 3 onsen pools on sight, but unfortunately the most famous one in the forest was close. Free parking on sight and friendly staff. Lobby is beautiful with free drinks corner.
