The Grosvenor Arms

The Grosvenor Arms is newly refurbished, it is traditional yet stylish, relaxed yet ‘buzzy’, and open all day. There are 16 bedrooms to choose from: cosy double, spacious double, deluxe double, balcony double, or suites – each one is beautifully appointed and furnished, decorated in a style appropriate to one of Shaftesbury’s oldest inns, but complete with the modern facilities you expect. You are always welcome, for a drink in the bar, a cup of coffee in the conservatory, or a pizza from the wood oven. The restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and the paved courtyard is always available for an alfresco lunch or drink.

Terrific hotel, room was spectacular. Clean, luxurious and very spacious. Staff professional and empowered to make decisions. Food and bar both good. Will stay again and will look at the other few hotels in the same ownership group.

Magnificent stay at this delightful Inn. Rooms were spacious and well appointed. Staff could not do enough for you and the full English breakfast was excellent. Fantastic view behind the Inn. Only regret was the restaurant is closed on Mondays. Great value for money and we would definitely stay here again.

Best Western Royal Chase Hotel

Located right in the middle of Thomas Hardy country, this is possibly Dorset's friendliest hotel. Close to the centre of historic Shaftesbury, the hotel sits in its own grounds with its pristine lawns and surrounded by glorious Dorset countryside and the ample charms of Somerset and Wiltshire. Unspoiled, beautiful counties offering a wide range of attractions plus an abundance of rural peace and tranquility. Those not to be missed include Wilton House, Longleat, Stourhead, Stonehenge and of course Shaftesbury's very own Gold Hill. The Royal Chase is privately owned and part of a small chain of quality hotels in Dorset and Devon. Please look at our sister hotels, The Rembrandt Hotel in Weymouth and The Lord Haldon in Exeter.

I stayed for a family wedding. Reception was a little frosty on check in, and the room was kind of dated . But then I experienced the hospitality, absolutely out of this world. The food was amazing, breakfast like you have at home. Even the head chef helped me tie my tie. Its like staying with family or close friends. Nothing is a bother. I stay in hotels every week. This little gem has blown my mind in the efforts they make. The best best Western hotel I have ever been in. Would highly recommend. Don't judge a book by its cover experience the treasure.

We arrived at lunchtime several hours prior to check in, and Ian not only kindly let us park our car he told us our room was ready so we could drop our bags and have a cup of tea after our drive. The room was lovely , airy and spacious with a well stocked tea tray. Ian was very friendly and welcoming, and gave us lots of information on the area. The bathroom was cosy and modern , with a great shower and toiletries provided. The bed was big and very comfy. The only potential downside could have been fron being next to a busy road , which was noisy , but the double glazing was so good we slept like logs. Breakfast was excellent, lots of choices of fruit yogurt etc , and a delicious full English, served byDiane , who was efficient and friendly with all the guests. Shaftesbury itself is lovely , we had great walks , and superb food. All in all a great place to stay , and we would thoroughly recommend Holbrook to anyone. Thanks Ian and Diane, we'll be back.

The Fontmell

The Fontmell, a newly refurbishment pub and dining room with six individually designed rooms, nestles in a valley between Cranborne Chase and the Blackmore Vale, just four miles from the town of Shaftesbury.

Excellent, accommodating and beautiful pub, restaurant and B&B

Reviewed By Q9992GAwilliamh

Our family of 6 stayed at the Fontmell pub for a weekend in December 2021, as we were attending a wedding at the local church (around a 2 minute walk from the pub). All 6 rooms had plenty of space, were clean, had double beds, tea/coffee facilities and spacious bathrooms. We had an excellent breakfast down in the pub on both the Saturday and Sunday morning, with a range of options on the menu. The staff were very accommodating and attentive, and were willing to adapt to any breakfast request. We also ate at the pub restaurant on the Friday evening, which had an excellent menu. We picked a range of options, and all the food was extremely fresh and delicious. The setting in the pub was very cosy, with open fires and a nice countryside feel. All the staff were extremely attentive and helpful. Overall, a thoroughly enjoyable weekend and we could not recommend the pub, restaurant and B&B highly enough.

The Benett Arms - Semley

*Under new ownership as of April 8th 2020* Are you looking for somewhere to eat, drink or stay near Shaftesbury? Look no further than The Benett Arms! A rural country family run pub. We are situated in the picturesque village of Semley on the Dorset/Wiltshire border. The Benett Arms features en-suite rooms with tea and coffee facilities. Continental and full English breakfasts are available. Enjoy a cosy evening in by the fire or a pint in our large beer garden in the summer.

Disappointing. It could do so much better to be what it once was.

Reviewed By Sheila B

We spent two nights at the Benett Arms preceeded by Sunday lunch for eight. The food was poor to average with very little in the way of fresh or homemade dishes. Two of our party had Lamb Shanks with a good selection of fresh vegetables, roast potatoes and Yorkshire puddings. They fared best. One had steak and kidney pie which looked homemade and apparently did taste good. One had fish pie which was mostly insipid mash. The rest had burgers and chips. The chips looked totally unappetising but as we'd all driven long distances to be together for a family get together were hungry. We first discovered this (then) lovely pub ten years ago when the food was excellent, delicious and homemade. We lived in the area so went often for the Sunday roast and great puddings, for ploughman's lunches eaten outside in the sun or in winter evenings when the fire was lit. The restaurant was always very busy - understandably and deservedly. The room was average but could be so much more welcoming. Instead of a second bed why not a comfy chair? The bed was comfortable thankfully. The approach to the rooms is disgracefully dismal. It's a small courtyard which could be easily tidied up and prettified instead of long dead plants in shabby old containers and discarded filthy sandbags. Sunday evening we were looked after and nothing seemed too much trouble as we sat in the bar with our drinks. Monday night we were clearly just an inconvenience as they shut the bar at 10. Breakfast is very poor. Everything pre cooked and warmed up. Far from generous. The sausages were vegetarian. No one appeared to be in charge or seemed to care. Toast served in a wicker basket with a filthy stained liner hidden by a large napkin. Is there a landlady? Is she a ghost? Surely if she wants the place to thrive she would want return customers (and would introduce herself, after all we spent a lot of money in her pub) but we never will never return. Such a shame.

Our host(ess) was very welcoming, the accommodation extremely clean and more than adequate for the 2 of us. The full English breakfast taken while watching the assorted wildlife of the smallholding (through the window) was a delight. Thoroughly recommend.
