We spent a full 2 weeks at this 'gite' and more than fully enjoyed it, not in the least charmed by its very friendly and helpful owners, Laurie and Stephane. A great pool, mostly private use, always warm welcome greetings with a big smile when we entered or left and even goodlooking viennoiserie-fruit breakfast (well done Laurie) included (we ourselves could also buy our own baguette with some non-sweets just everyday fresh around the corner at the roundabout, what a luxury eating on the terrace!). Garden is really beautiful and well maintained (compliments Stephane) as well as the pool (enjoy the flowers, trees, bananas, mangos and even koi and turtles around it), our chalet just on the poolside was great. Wifi and internet also provided free and even if not working for a minute, Stephane fixes it immediately. Chapeau! Better than at home of those who complain we guess.... Put your food in the provided fridge and you will have no troubles with ants.... Ignore those complaints of other guests, we checked it all out and really, nothing holds. Think of the traffic noise at home... and if you bother to speak some French, Stephane and Laurie will try to help you out with any problem even if your French is as rusty as ours. Majority of guests were French but respecting all the privacy we needed and without exception we liked them all, always friendly and polite and helping us to upgrade our sometimes kreol like language to better French (although Parisiens if around will undoubtedly try to compete a bit if you are from Amsterdam haha). Drinking some pastis, rhum, wine or cider easens everything. Proud to be in Europe together with France! Rules for the place are clearly displayed and easy to stick to, and seemed very fair to us, such als breakfast and swimming times. Maybe you want to bring your own towels, but they are also provided... Be careful to mind the height of the bed in the chalet, and do not bump into its edges as we did painfully some nights... and buy your own toilet paper plus plastic waste bags (you can recycle the ones you get while shopping). Big wastebins are around at the place. For sightseeing and a good walk: Walk to the Langevin seaside from the venue (just follow the length of Rue Mace downhill), especially at sunrise or sunset, great park area there or walk uphill behind the baker and little supermarket (which we thought a bit too expensive!) and you will see flowers and landscapes for life near the big hill of Langevin. It all took us by surprise, so beautiful and closeby! Great free parking space just opposite La Rose du Sud and very easy to find. Make sure you check out the Simply supermarket in Langevin Centre next to the Mosque, we liked it (the supermarket). A bit better than the chaotic Leclerc Express there. And French Hypermarkets anywhere on the island with all you need (Auchan e.g.). Rent a car for sure, you will not regret. We liked the Anse des Cascades on the Eastcoast behind the volcano lavas the most of all plus Hell Bourg/Salazie, drove ourselves. You can take the bus to Cilaos from St Louis (parking free very close) for a steep but relaxed and very cheap daytrip through mountaineous roads and tunnels, no self drive we decided and did not regret. St Pierre is the most charming beaching place with restaurants along the boulevard. The cascade near Langevin is worthwile, but some nasty hairpins in the road, be prepared and park before the end of the road just before the cacade. The Niagara cascade is nice too near the airport, but a long way (maybe on your return home day as we did). St Denis though - forget it, what a dreadful place..... Wave and lava watching is excellent, we enjoyed the people and nature of La Reunion more than we ever expected and are still thrilled by the pictures and movies we could make. Stay at La Rose du Sud and you have a perfect home base with fantastic hosts... Wow.... as some friends remarked hearing and seeing our stories...

We stayed two nights in this beautiful bnb in the heights above St. Joseph. The view was breathtaking! We will always remember the delicious food which was served on the veranda. Nearly every day the kind hosts offer to cook dinner for the guests and we highly recomend to take this opportunity. We were allowed to taste some of the rum arrangé.Thank you once again and merci!

Auberge Desprairies is kind of a hidden gem. Slightly off the beaten track, but still fast and easy to get to from the main coastal highway, this place has everything you need. The staff was friendly; the room was comfy, clean and quiet; the forested setting was lovely; and there were a dozen jams from which to choose at the (included) breakfast. No complaints at all and would recommend to others who are looking for a nice, quiet place to stay in Saint-Joseph.

We recently spent 2 weeks travelling around Reunion staying in 4 different locations and La Caverne des Hirondelles was certainly one of the great hightlights. It is an oasis of tranquil beauty just on the outskirts of the town of St Joseph down a well hidden track with glorious views across the owners' garden to the sea. The accommodation is of a very high standard and we were charmed by the allemande flowers decorating the bathroom basin. M & Mme could not have been more helpful, pressing home grown bananas on us as we went out for the day and showing great patience with our less than perfect French. But it is the breakfast which is the piece de resistance. An exotic platter of fresh fruits, ready prepared, some of which we had never seen before, and fresh baguette which M went out to buy early each morning to accompany three different home made preserves. The freshly squeezed orange juice came in a glass decorated with fesh flowers and all was served on the terrace overlooking the garden and sea. Bliss! Probably the best breakfast we have eaten in the whole of France, not just in Reunion. Highly recommended. The only slight problem is the lack of good places to eat in the evenings, although the restaurant Ambroisie proved very acceptable and it's within walking distance!)

Hi, my name is Gandalf, I am a Belgium Shepard (Malinois, friends call us affectionately "Malli"). I was born on June 26th, 2006. My home is close to St. Joseph, a city in the green and wild south of the Reunion Island. "Ile de de la Reunion" is a volcanic island in the Indian Ocean, about 800 km east of Madagascar and 180 km SW of its better known and elder sister Mauritius. On the picture, you spot me in Cilaos in the mountains of the island, in frond of the Col de Taibit, the pass towards Mafate. Actually, I am living at the coast, at the foot of an active Vulcan "Piton de la Fournaise" in Manapany les Bains, 200 m away of a protected bay for swimming, I am room mating with Christina, Claus and Eowyn. And of course with guests and friends who are spending their vacation with us. We are living in a guesthouse of Creole style, with 5 individually decorated rooms, porch, tropical garden and lots of smaller and bigger items to make their vacations on this remote island to an unforgettable adventure. Together with us at the GANDALF SAFARI CAMP, a small private Guesthouse on Reunion Island.
forgot to say that in a previous review Claus and Christina present your breakfast beautifully - I took photographs - Claus went to the effort of getting local mangoes for us to try and bake delicious German bread. They say it's the best breakfast along that coast and certainly we didn't have anything quite like it anywhere else in Reunion. Christina has made an amazing mosaic garden which is well worth seeing- she is very artistic. They have some special trees growing. We loved the fact that Gandalfs is close to the Manapany pool which is fabulous for an early morning or evening swim which is great to cool off by in the hot and humid climate of the Reunion coast. As I said before Claus is a mind of information and will help you discover this island which is varied and very beautiful.

We were saddened to have this conclusion but this place is more the Village Of Savages than the sauvage village. the place is tiny and could be cosy if it was quiet. it is not! Barely no welcoming position of the host, no information regarding breakfast, no anwswering to our questions about the noise of the neighbour (a private party in the close next bungalows with soundsystem and a lot of guest during covid protocol) no self questionning and some brutal rudeness from the host. couldnt leave because of the curfew. bad sleep with noise. no breakfast and no news at 8.30am. we left with the kids famished. sent them the check just because we are honest, not because they deserve any retribution unhappily. seems that the covid crisis has erased some of the spirit of why those people would welcome people at the first place. Anyway, can not recommend.

Our Bed & Breakfast is located in the Southern part of Reunion Island. Our comfortable rooms and our excellent knowledge of the island will help make your stay with us unforgettable. All of our rooms are equipped with a private bathing facility and mosquito nets. A delicious breakfast composed of fresh local pastry and fruits is also offered to all of our guest. We are close to the ocean with easy access to most touristic attractions.
We loved staying here. The hosts were so charming. Kind-hearted, and put on a great breakfast. Location is great - not too far from St-Joseph or the main highway or the "beaches" (beaches are not the greatest in this part of the island). But great for going in to the ravines and waterfalls or the lava fields. Room was clean and neat and as you would expect for this price. Wifi was good, and signal strong in the room.

Style box of old Creole , independent and modern , they are located close to the house owners. The rooms are equipped with double king size bed , bathroom (walk-in shower) and private toilets . The pool , WIFI connection and a parking space is available. Nestled in a green setting, you will be seduced by the charm of places and heat of the Southern Wild
The b&b is quite new and the bungalows are extraordinary clean. We had dinner with the owners and you can really feel that they are enthusiastic hosts. Even us not speaking French and them not speaking English was not a barrier for a very funny night (googletranslate and mimic is helping a lot...). They have a great pool which delivers a view on the ocean and is a super place to relax and take a swim. Dinner was fantastic and also the breakfast with home made marmelade was very good. We would definitely go there again and stay longer than just one night.
