This hotel is very well kept. After we were very friendly greeted we found our room to be spacious and clean. The mattrass is harder than most hotelsbeds and we love that we slept on the bed instead of in it. The bathroom had a curved waterrod but very low waterpressure. We got towels and toileteries and were served a breakfast with great choices. They had different kind of breads, cereals, yogurts, fruits even had granola to pick from and warm items. They kept it clean and very well stocked during breakfast.

The National 9 Inn in Placerville CA is a clean, well kept older motel with very reasonable prices. The bed was comfortable, hot water hot, the tv had a good number of channels. The furnishings are a bit dated, but that was not a problem and expected. I was warmly welcomed by the lady (owner?) at the front desk. My one complaint were the lampshades on all the lights in the room. They were all ripped and torn inside (see pictures). On a previous stay a few months ago the light shades in the room I was in were the same. As these lampshades don’t cost much at all, I’d recommend that this National 9 purchase some on line or head to the nearest Walmart to buy some. It would make the room look much nicer, especially when the lights are on, at a minimal cost.

I stayed at the Cary House from October 30 to 31, 2021 for an event. The hosting group arranged a special group room rate of $129, Deluxe Queen, plus tax that was provided to both the Cary House management and their intended guests. I made the reservation with a Cary House employee by the name of Christie, on the phone, who confirmed the $129 plus tax rate on October 24, 2021 at 8:40 pm. I was assured I would receive an emailed confirmation of the reservation at $129 plus tax, but it was never delivered. On October, 30, 2021, Christie checked me in on October 30 and verbally confirmed the reservation price of $129 plus tax. I was not given any paperwork on check-in and expecting a receipt to be slid under my door, which is a common practice with just about every hotel in the world. I left the next morning by 7 am, when there was no one at the front desk and no one on staff. I never received a paid invoice. There was no email follow-up, which, again is a standard hotel industry practice to forward a guest their paid receipt. On November 3, 2021, I saw a credit card charge on my account from the Cary House of $306.90 and I was totally flabbergasted. I had to call and leave messages for an arrogant, pugnacious, and unprofessional so-called “manager” by the name of Joshua S., who I found out later is the assistant manager of the Cary House. I do need to state, in my phone call with Joshua S. on November 3, not only was he arrogant, belligerent, and condescending, he would still not offer or provide an emailed or snail-mail copy of the paid receipt or a copy of my sign-in affidavit. He relentlessly argued that the $306.90 was the room rate and no employee of his would agree to such a low-ball price of only $129, “especially on Halloween Weekend.” When I questioned, why did I not receive a paid bill under my door first thing in the morning, he stated he worked in the hotel industry for ten years and he never heard of such a practice. This statement alone display rank amature status of his skill set. I was so frustrated with his condescending belligerence, when I asked for his full name, he flat out stated, “I will not give you my last name, only my first.” I emailed Joshua the copy of the group room rate agreement with the hotel on November 3, 2021, with a detailed email, such as this explanation, and Joshua wrote back, “Thank you for your email. I am investigating this matter and trying to reach a solution for you at this time. Please be advised I will follow up with you within the next 48hr in regards to the issues solution. Thank You Joshua S. General Manager Cary House Hotel” Joshua never replied and made no effort to “investigate” the overcharge. On November 8, I emailed him that I would be disputing the charge with my credit card company. And I have. Again, he never replied. I have no issue with paying the agreed to amount of $129.00, but this was clearly a bait and switch reservation where the Cary House more than doubled the price of the room by over 100% when they agreed to a special group rate, thinking they can get away with the overcharge. I am a seasoned business traveler with some 35-years of experience and I have never encountered such inferior business tactics and despicable customer service. I infrequently travel to this region of the world for small conferences. The celebratory conference I attended at the Cary House was for 40 people. I have advised this organization to never use the Cary House again. If you’re considering using the Cary House for any kind of function or even a one night stay, don’t. The staff is miserable, unprofessional, and apish and the hotel is tired, musty, creaky, under-heated, and simply bleak. Avoid at all costs. And the best possible advice I could give to the ownership of the Cary House: Fire Joshua S today.

We should have asked to see a room before paying. but the less time spent with the decidedly unfriendly owners the better. The room was so small that there was no room for even a single chair. The bed cover was old and worn thin. The carpet was old, worn and torn. The sink was vey slow to drain and the cross bar on the towel rack was missing. The wall had been patched but not painted. It was a cool night and the heater did not work. After the owner fiddled with it to no avail, he brought in an electric space heater. We asked if we couldn't just move next door. He said it was reserved. The next morning it was still vacant'' Be prepared to pay an extra $20 for a pet and a $50 deposit. Drive an extra 10 miles to the next town.

AC didn't work, silverfish crawling on walls, bathroom floor, my bed, curtains wouldn't cover the entire window, no wifi. The MotherLode Motel or National 9 are better choices. No pool here. Faces highway 50, super noisy. Nothing to eat or drink within walking distance.

I stayed for five nights at the Eden Vale Inn. It was not my first visit and I have been several times. I was on my own and Karen and David could not have been more helpful. The room I had was fabulous. Everything is super clean, breakfast delicious. Sit around the fire pit watching the sun go down with a glass of wine. Get a massage with the amazing Barb in the spa. I didn’t want to leave.
