Really fantastic hostel. Some reviews criticize the location but the location is incredible with 10/10 views. It's only 500 metres from the road or a $1.50 taxi from the city centre. Our room (Yura) had an incredible view I'd expect to pay $100 for, not $15. Great kitchen, nice gardens and lounge, small bar, laundry service, real hostel info about the whole region available, book library. All in all, one of the best places we've stayed in south America in 4+ months. Posted January 2022!

Termas de Papallacta is a Hot Springs SPA, Resort & Convention Center nestled in a majestic valley of the high Andes only 45 minutes driving from the new Quito Airport and 1 hour from Quito city. We are located at Km 65 on the way to Baeza following the Interoceanic road. Our resort is on the "Cinnamon Trail", the same route that the Spanish conquistador Francisco de Orellana took in 1542 when he crossed the Andean mountain range searching for gold and other treasures, and which unexpectedly led him to discover the Amazon River. Papallacta is the doorway to the Ecuadorian Amazon region, despite being in the Ecuadorian Highlands at an altitude of 10.827 feet (3.300 meters) above sea level and of an average daytime temperature of 14°C (57°F).
We went to Papallacta during the week and it was tranquilo. Beautiful trip from Quito hired a driver through our hotel . Lots of different temperatures among the pools with lots of space in most of them to spread out. Be aware most likely you'll need to wear a polo cap to cover your hair. I think there is a charge (minimal) for robes. Nice mountain surroundings. There's a couple of restaurants one is more snacks than a sit down. There a lots of places to get out of the sun with tables and chairs (no problem the day we went was not sunny).

Let your adventures take you to the Amazon and enjoy our exciting jungle tours and our sustainable guesthouse set in the lush rainforest. The guesthouse is owned by an Ecuadorian/North American couple and is located in Tena which is known for the most diverse and pristine rivers in the world! Tena is set right at the base of the Andes Mountains, which makes it one of the best places to observe flora and fauna in the Amazon jungle.
Brilliant experience! Both the hostel and tours were great. The room was fantastic and felt much better than the "hostel" tag. The kayak tour we did was also great and adjusted to suit me as an experienced kayakers with my partner who had not done very much before. Tony was very passionate about conservation and runs a great company! Fantastic all round.

We have just returned from a 3 day/2 night stay at Huasquila. We were exhausted and needed somewhere to rest. Huasquila is close enough to Quito that we could travel easily. But it is a different world! What a lovely and rejuvenating time we had there. The staff couldn't have been more attentive. The food was delicious. Our bungalow was beautiful, simple, rustic, and spotlessly clean. The bed was so comfortable. We were surrounded by plants and wildlife. Lying in the hammock or relaxing in the jacuzzi listening to the birds and the frogs was magical. Now we are revived and ready to go back to work! We will certainly visit Huasquila again. The other guests were having a great time, enjoying a variety of exciting tours and activities. We hope to do that too next time! Thank you all!

We are a little family run hostel located in the green part of Misahualli, in a walking distance (800m) from the center. The name come from banana plants growing in the garden of the Banana Lodge. The garden has orange, lemon, guayava, guava, lichi, coffee and cacao trees and various tropical plants including pineapples. We have a majestic view to a curve of the river Misahualli and primary jungle. You can listen to the nature and smell it right here. We provide accommodation in comfortable rooms with mosquito protection, fans/airconditioners and private bathrooms with hot water. Delicious breakfasts are available. The guests can enjoy staying in a hammocks, swim in the river, exchange books, use free internet WiFi everywhere and guest kitchen. We also arrange tailored jungle tours, indigenous craft courses, rituals of ayahuaska and spanish classes.
This is a very clean hotel right on the river in the Amazon. The breakfast which is included is excellent and the service is very good. Ana Is very good at finding could guides to take you to interesting cultural places. Excellent value! This is a short walk into town.

Hamadryade Lodge is a luxurious hotel located in the High Amazon region, near Puerto Misahualli. This ecosystem, even if it is still the Amazonian Rainforest, is very different that the one in Lower regions. We are at 500mts altitude with hills and small mountains. Therefore, the climate remains pleasant all year round (24°C in average), and the absence of swamps allows an easier access to the more remote zones of Primary Rainforest, and of course the most positive consequence, is that we do not suffer from the presence of mosquitoes and Malaria.
The website doesn’t paint an accurate picture of what to expect, especially for travelers who have stayed in what are touted as luxury jungle resorts in the past. I’ll start with the pros: 1. The kitchen/check-in staff are LOVELY. Incredibly warm and friendly. They tend to the day-to-day duties of the property, including preparing the meals, which were actually some of the best we had in Ecuador. They spoke very little English, just as an FYI. My husband (who can speak Spanish at an elementary level) frequently had to translate for other guests, but I would just suggest to download translation apps before visiting if no one in your party is semi fluent. 2. Lovely pool area with hammocks. 3. Villa #5 (the larger two bedroom) has bathrooms that open to the outside, fostering a wonderful immersive jungle shower feel! But the cons… 1. The resort’s descriptions for their myriad experiences aren’t realistic. For us personally, we never saw the advertised flora and fauna (which we get you can never guarantee wildlife), but we literally never saw anything beyond a small bird the entire time we were there (3 nights), and the resort touts monkeys, brightly hued tree frogs, snakes, toucans, parrots, etc. No other guest we talked to saw anything either - not on the night walk, parrot tour, full-day jungle trek, etc. Again, this could’ve been bad luck, but we also did a reflexology treatment which was a light foot massage (I’ve had wonderful reflexology treatments in Sedona, Thailand, et al), so I feel like everything from their list of experiences was pulled from marketing speak that doesn’t actually represent what you’re getting. 2. The rooms, while beautiful, were weathered. The screens had numerous holes that allowed all the stinging bugs to make their way through. We had a giant lizard friend one night; super cool, yes, but it made me wonder what other crawlers were behind him! (*caveat: I was not upset about the lizard. It’s the jungle, lol, and I understand that bugs are a part of the experience. I just think the relative price and the way the hotel presents itself doesn’t prepare guest for this.) 3. Finally, this was a personal experience (and I can’t stand when Trip Advisor users implore people lot to stay because of hyper specific experiences they had that probably won’t affect anyone else), but I was disappointed with the way the resort handled it, which I think is important to tell. There are five villas - 4 one-bedrooms and 1 two-bedroom - and my husband and I booked the two-bed as we loved the look and layout - two story, bathrooms that opened to the outside, super secluded at the far end of the property. It, obviously, was much more expensive. We paid 50% at booking, then when we arrived, we were taken to a one-bedroom. I asked the staff and showed them my confirmed booking, and was told I would need to wait until the GM got in later that night. When she did, she told me that the two-bedroom villa was booked for the remainder of my stay. On day two, she told me that we could in fact move to the larger villa, but it would be late, prob 9 pm. We finally got a call around 11:40pm that we could move. That was fine, but when we checked out, we saw they charged us the higher rate for that night. Technically fair, since we did sleep in the room that night, but after all our trouble and the extremely late hour we got access to the room (check in is at 4), it seemed a bit tacky. Long review, but to summarize, it’s not as nice as it’s website leads on. If you’re cool with that, great, but there are so many other truly wonderful places in Ecuador that won’t leave you wanting.

Selina is located in the middle of Tena and Misahualli a small village nearby with a more laidback jungle vibe than Tena. Here, you will be surrounded by wildlife, rapids, and the sights and sounds of the jungle on all sides. Your neighbors may be the famous monkeys that live in town! Selina is one of the few places in town that can boast consistent WiFi. Stop by for a drink or healthy snack at our in-house restaurant, stay in one of our community rooms, privates, or suites, and admire the art from local talent gracing the walls of our friendly, comfortable home, whitewater rafting, kayaking, jungle trekking and more: Tena has everything for explorers. This town is the gateway to the Amazon and has lots of activities to kick your trip off right.
It’s really hard to believe the many good reviews for this place. I like adventure travel, but this is the wrong sort of adventure. Facilities are spartan, staff are indifferent and even the placement of the property, on an empty and ugly stretch of river defies explanation. Avoid!

This conveniently situated hostel is run by Michael and his beautiful wife Beatriz. Their sons Roger and Jimmy often help out as well. I ended up staying here for over three months as I liked it so much. Clean comfortable rooms, a well equipped shared kitchen, on-site organized jungle tours and an efficient laundry service are only a few of the reasons I will be going back. And just wait until you see the mountain view from the kitchen on the top floor. Breathtaking. It's also a quick walk to the city center where you easily find groceries, restaurants and various stores. I've stayed in a few places in Tena over the years and haven't found better value than I did at Hostal Limoncocha; the prices are very good. Friendly, welcoming and extremely accommodating ... every day. This place attracts both Ecuadorian and foreign guests and had a great reputation around the area when I inquired about it. Michael and his wife are kind, genuine people who look after their guests and put a lot of thought and time into their business. We quickly all became friends. Nice work! And you know I'll be back soon Michael. :)
