We used this hotel as the starting point of our Yoredale long distance walk. After being unable to get our usual b&b we went for this one and what a treat! The rooms are huge and beautifully clean. The attention to detail superb and a breakfast that was delicious and plentiful! If you stay here you will not be disappointed! My husband was not doing the walk with us and they even let him stay until 11am and provided him with coffee whilst he waited. We couldn’t have asked for more! Thank you to the staff who looked after us all… you are amazing!

We stayed at The Bull as part of our house buying process. At the end of a long , arduous moving day process we were looking for somewhere to have good food , comfy beds and time to unwind and recover . We were not disappointed ! The owners made us very welcome in the middle of winter and we truly appreciated having some excellent food and a availing ourselves of a deep hot bath. The Bull is in a fabulous location for walking adventures in Yorkshire and Eden valley. Excellent value for money and we would highly recommend . Worth knowing - Dog friendly in the bar and facilities for drying walking gear if required. If your looking to stay in peak season weekends you should plan early as understandably they are popular.

Just back from Cumbria where we stayed at The Black Bull for three (prepaid) nights. First the positives. Bed was very good and they had great wi fi. That is all the goods. We arrived and went to check in. We were told by the young lady who was the only member of staff on duty that they were not offering breakfasts but if we go across the road the cafe there opens at 8.00am (it opened at 9.00).The welcome book in the room said they DID breakfasts! On the first night we couldn't sleep as the toilet sistern was running all night and when we got up at 7.30 we had no hot water so boiled the kettle so we could at least wash our faces. Partner went downstairs to report both issues but no one around except a cleaner who spoke very little english but held up the hands to say TEN. We went back down stairs at 10.00 and went into the bar but couldn't find anyone there despite shouting out. We decided to leave them a note so they would be aware of the issues we had come across. During the day we thought we had better ring the Black Bull. Spoke to a lady who told us that when we got back we would be allowed to move from Room 6 to Room 8. Got back to the pub early evening and we were told by another young lady and also the chef(?) that they had spoken to the manager and that the sistern was fixed and they weren't allowed to move people to other rooms. Not sure where this manager was. maybe they were working from home??? Our issues with the hot water were dismissed as our room is furthest from the boiler!!! I repeated that there definately wasn't any hot water at 7.30 but there was at 10.00. Night 2 was fine although the sistern was still dripping but we couldn't hear it with the bathroom door closed. Night three the issue was back and it was louder. We managed to play around with the sistern ourselves so quieten it down. To summarise. The bathroom has part of the papered ceiling coming down and the vinyl flooring coming up by the door. There are no staff there if there was an issue. Who the manager is I don't know. £85.00 per night for a poor room only with issues is not good. We would have left but we had paid in advance through Booking.com; The staff they do have there don't seem to know what is going on as what we were told was not consistent. We picked this place because of its good reviews but looking again all the reviews are from a year ago. I think someone has taken it on and they are running it on a shoestring. We noticed someone had written a very bad review in the visitors book but when we next went past it had been ripped out. Avoid this place it is by no means a hotel.

What a brillaint place to stay. My friends, the dog and I stayed for 2 night during the coast to coast and couldn't have been more impressed. Carol provides an excellent service that is second to none. You arrive to freshly baked scones and tea, the rooms are immaculate with so many personal touches that make your stay really enjoyable including excellent hairdryers, bath robes and bed mints. She is more than dog friendly and makes sure your four legged friend is as happy as you are. The breakfasts are stunning with two courses not to be missed out on, the fruit salad is exquisite with raspberries, pomegranate, mango and kiwi and the omelettes are amazing. The service really is to an excellent standard and Carol will even do a wash load for a small charge. We will definetly be returning!

I hate to write bad reviews, preferring to allow hosts a right to reply, however I am extremely disappointed in the quality of my stay. Communication has been non-existent, I sent a message to check that it was ok to have my baby with me and heard nothing. But that’s one of those things and I’d deal with that on the day. Check-in was perfect, I was warmly greeted, shown to my room and had the offer to take my luggage up to my room. My room was also adequate enough for the price I’d paid and just for us to get our heads down for the night. I was even going to be highly complimentary on review sites! However, this all changed at just after midnight that night. The fire alarm was going off, we made our way down to the exit, to find all the other guests on the main landing, no member of staff to tell us what to do, where to go or to even turn the alarm off. There was a highly intoxicated, topless man being extremely loud and kept talking and trying to touch and play with my son. He then had an argument with another guest which was getting rather heated.(guest behaviour is beyond the hotel’s control but if we had had direction then I believe this wouldn’t have happened, and we wouldn’t have felt vulnerable). The rooms are above the inn, so the door to the main entrance is locked after 11pm but guests can use a side door to come and go. On this door was scribbled on a piece of card that there was no breakfast the next morning due to staff shortages, leave your keys in the door and exit via the side entrance to check out. This meant that when we were eventually left with no option but to ring and waste the time of the fire brigade, they couldn’t get to the alarm system to turn it off! They had to break the combination lock on the door! This all took place whilst we all waited outside, thankfully me and my son were given a warm seat in the fire engine. It was deemed safe to return, however, I was concerned that as we didn’t know why it had gone off the first time that it could very well go off again, so I didn’t get the rest I needed before driving 3.5 hours to go home. Thankfully it didn’t! I couldn’t speak to any staff before we left, as they weren’t open and no one was coming in anyway. I have tried to message ‘Kirsty’ again to try and have this discussion that there should be a much clearer policy on what should happen in the case that the fire alarm goes off at night. I am really disgusted at the lack of communication or to try to make this up to us in any way. DO NOT STAY HERE, ITS NOT SAFE AND NO ONE CARES! AVOID AT ALL COSTS

Very welcome after our long walk over the Howgills from Sedburgh. Brenda very kindly gave us a lift to and from a local pub for dinner.
