We went to Kyushu during Golden Week, so the price of most hotel at Oita area are too expensive for our budget. We choose Route Inn Hita as a stopover before going to Beppu. The room size and bed size are adequate (single room with bed size of 130cm, twin room with bed size of 110 cm each). There is a nice public bath in the hotel. Breakfast is tasty with enough variety. There are plenty of parking space in front and next to the hotel (it is extremely important during high season!), and it is free! Hita is a quiet town after 5 pm, so there aren't many restaurant that one can choose for dinner. But nevertheless, it is a satisfying experience :)

Our group of 13 recently booked out this 6 bedroom boutique hotel for 3 nights. Every member of our group was delighted with the refined, Japanese-Western fusion appointments. Each room has its own bathroom (one with a cedar bath) and there are also men's and women's onsen. The women's onsen has 2 massage chairs to add to the relaxation. The Japanese/French meal we had at the hotel's restaurant was top class and the Japanese breakfasts each morning were delicious. After breakfast each morning we were served coffee in the lounge. The tasteful and comfortable lounge was a great place for our group to gather in the evening and share a drink from the fridge there. It certainly contributed to how well our group bonded. What makes this hotel so outstanding, however, is the above and beyond level of hospitality of Mao san and his staff. His level of service was extremely generous and kind - he even picked us up at the station when we returned at 11pm one night and another night walked us to a local restaurant and even ordered food.

Stayed at this ryokan in August. We came after two weeks of seeing many temples and castles, in almost tropical heat, in Tokyo and Kyoto and a number of places in between. So we needed the rest. The combination of the great ontsens, fantastic service and great food did the trick. It was a wonderful experience. My son and I stayed for two nights. We wore only the comfortable yukatas and went together to a private family ontsen which you can reserve (at no additional cost) for 45 minutes at a time. The price is high (one night came to over 50 thousand yen). We had a comfortable room, but without a private ontsen bath, either inside or outside. But when you count in the culinary experience, it was definitely worth it! Dinners come in 10 courses.. the second dinner had the famous Japanese shabu-shabu barbecue as the main course. We tried it before in a restaurant in Kyoto; definitely a highlight. You briefly boil raw beef or pork and lots of vegetables in water, then dip in a peanut or vinegar/soy sauce and eat. Heavenly! Sanso Tensui definitely gets huge thumbs up. Especially the very nice gentleman who spoke good English and took care of us all the time. Our friends and us seemed to be the only foreigners around. Most staff did not speak much English, but his English was very good. Heard a lot about ryokans before travelling to Japan. Now I can confirm, it is a very worthwhile experience!

客室は基本的にはベッドルームです。3名以上の場合は布団を使用します。グレードの高い客室には露天風呂があります。
The minute you walk in, you relinquish your shoes. Everywhere is tatami and so we walk in our socks or indoor shoes, an immediate plus and relaxing moment. Our room was called The Annex. It is apart from the hotel. The Annex is Japanese with tatami and western beds, very comfortable. When we approached the front door, the views off the private garden were gorgeously dramatic mountain cliffs and there are views of other mountains and the stream from the other side of The Annex as well. Spacious and open and extremely comfortable. While many rooms come with a private dining room in the restaurant, the private eating room associated with the Annex also has another private garden with views of the mountains. A small note: All liquids in the frig are complimentary, nice touch! The service was excellent, well trained. The food was delicious even though we have many dietary limits - like no meat, pork, heavy oils. They accommodated our restrictions with delicious, fresh fish and vegetables and fruit. The onsens, even though public access as well, were clean and designed beautifully. We've been to many ryokans this year, mainly in Kyushu since we live here. This onsen had the most beautiful facilities - and the views were drop dead gorgeous. My jaw literally dropped when I saw the view from the onsen with the lounge chairs in the steaming water - and what an amazing onsen that was!!! After much thought, the only downside is the outdoor tub in the Annex, which is really not an onsen since it used chlorinated water and the two of us had to squeeze in. Having said that, we already booked our next stay in the spring and cannot wait to return.

I stayed here for two days in December of 2019. Very clean, very quiet, and beautiful grounds. There was a river just outside my window with rapids for a gorgeous sound. The hot spring baths were hot and clean. Very nice. The staff were so incredibly polite and very patient with my lack of Japanese. The food was very good, too much for me actually. I would have happily stayed here a month!

As a midpoint stop when travelling from Aso to Fukuoka, we stayed at Hita for one night. Kizantei is one of the traditional hotels near Mikuwagama with the spectacular view and onsen. The staff did not speak fluent English but they were very friendly and nice. Free bicycles and umbrella available at the front door. You may also choose your own kimonos to wear during your stay. We reserved a dinner in the house boat. The boat shall travel along the mikuwagama river together with some house boats of other hotels. In ancient Japan, it was an activity for the noble class. When we almost finished our dinner, there was a fish-catching bird performance. The experience would be perfect if the staff had not turned on the florescent lamp in the boat on the way back to the hotel which attracted a swarm of flying insects. Onsen is kinda small but the view there is quite nice.

Don't let the photo mislead you like it did to me. the hotel itself is really rundown. The room has smells of cigarettes even though we asked for a non smoking room. However, the traditional in room service dinner was exceptionally good. The picture shows the boat in the river, we went late April and they said it is not in operation until summer.
