The hirugano Highland is at an altitude of 900 meters, on the south side of Mt. Haku, Japan's famous mountain. It's convenient for sightseeing in Hida Takayama, Shirakawa-go and Gujo-Hachiman. Skiing, snowboarding , rafting , golf and tennis can also play outdoor sports. *Please come by car.
I was attracted by the woody Scandinavian look from hotel photos. And it was exactly how it when we arrived. We had the loft cottage and our kids (13 and 10) were overjoyed with the choice. The loft immediately became their sanctuary and they were totally at home with their own floor. It's a very comfortable space for our family of 4. There is a kitchenette which would have been really useful if we had stayed longer. It is very clean and self sufficient. Take note that the hotel is about 30-40mins drive away from Gujo Hachiman city center, so you would want to explore the city before you drive up to the hotel. Also note that if you will need to make a reservation for their dinner or BBQ at your cottage (this is not mentioned in their english website). However right outside the hotel, there are a few eateries (Italian and Chinese) and there is also a convenience store right round the corner so you will not be left with no dinner if you arrive late. But the Italian food we had was nothing to shout about, so please plan well before your arrival. If you relish a quiet vacation base away from the touristy traps (eg Takayama), you can easily use Gujo as a base to travel up to Shirakawago or to Takayama. There will be people who prefer the buzz at Takayama but we found Gujo absolutely peaceful and wished we had more time in this place

The Yoshidaya, which is the main hotel cum ryokan in Gujo town was full, so we settled for the next best hotel, the Gujo Hachiman, which is 4km from town (about a 7-8 min drive). The fairly large hotel is dated and rather ordinary, however is acceptable if you just need a stopover in the small town of Gujo. On the night we were there a large tour group had checked in as well. The hotel boasts a number of onsens, however the truth is that there is a large public onsen facility annexed to the hotel which hotel guests can use. We did not feel compelled to try the onsen, which was well patronised. A quaint feature of the hotel is a theatre of sorts also annexed to the hotel, which hotel guests are entitled to for free as well. There was a show starting at 7pm featuring a male/female character in full costume the night we were there. At 9pm there was a dance session where guests could have a go at the famed Gujo Odori dance. We opted not to have dinner provided ryokan-style in our room and instead drove into town for a splendid Hitsumaboshi dinner. Breakfast was in a large dining hall, and though simple and no frills it was a good Japanese breakfast.

We stayed in a 2 Twin Beds room for 2 nights, halfboard included. Reception service was excellent and during check-in, we received several vouchers for discount with ski equipment rentals, external hot springs, shops etc. And we also got 2 vouchers for a day’s lift pass to Washigatake ski field so I had to give this hotel an excellent rating! Room was large with tatami area and we were given the side facing the ski slopes. Simple and older designs but well maintained. Buffet dinner and breakfast. Selections were excellent. In one of the dinners, a whole large salmon cut with smaller pieces was served for sashimi (raw fish).

Facility is kind of new and very very clean. Good chinese restaurant, Italian, Izakaya, and beautiful nature are located near the house. Public transportation is only weakness. Totally very reasonable. Perfect for fishers, group, tourists from abroad. 施設は新しく、また非常にきれいに手入れされています。近くに中華、イタリアン、居酒屋もあり食事も心配なし。釣り、グループ、外国人観光客などに、たいへんおすすめです。

We booked a Western Style room and was upgraded to a bigger room during check-in. European and rustic design but good furnishings and very well-maintained. The room also had balcony with a nice view of the surroundings. Nice public bath on the top 5th Floor. Breakfast and Dinner were included as we went for the half board package. An excellent Kaiseki was served for dinner. Breakfast Buffet was equally nice.

Located at a walking distance of 15 minutes from Gujo Hacchiman station. This hotel is a traditional Japanese Ryokan. Good eating, site seeing and shopping places located nearby. Gujo Hacchiman castle is a 25 minutes walk from this hotel and many shrines are nearby. The view from our window was wonderful.
