I have luckily had no experience with BEDBUGS, that is, prior to this stay (at HI in Cadillac 1/21-1/23). Nonetheless, at every hotel before we even move our stuff into the room I perform the perfunctory check by flipping up the top corner of the sheet and pad on each bed to see if I see anything crawling (after this experience and the research that I’ve done since, I realize my inspections are not thorough enough and I now know exactly what I’m looking for). All seemed well. We stayed Friday night, then spent the next day skiing at Crystal Mountain (fantastic day!). When we returned back to the hotel, exhausted, I "rested my eyes" while my husband showered and before I knew it it was 12:30 am. I got up to shower and get my stuff around for the next day (skiing at Caberfae). When I returned to the bed I SAW A BUG ON MY PILLOW. My phone was sitting on the table as well as a tissue. Like I said, I have had no experience w/ bedbugs; this bug was about ¼” which I thought was way too large to be one, so I took a photo (because bugs in MI in winter is odd, and just in case), then grabbed the tissue and flushed it down the toilet (hindsight thinking I probably shouldn’t have done that but I might have panicked a little). ATTACHED IS THE PHOTO- I’ve also attached a screenshot of the photo with the date stamp to verify this photo was indeed taken on the date I have stated (I can't get 1:15 am to appear in the sort option). Just to be sure, I googled bedbugs and sure enough, adults are around ¼” and the side-by-side comparison I performed indeed proved it to be just that. I took the photo down to the desk, I honestly wanted someone to tell me that it was something else, but knowing that it was what I feared. The women at the desk were very nice and told me that they agreed it looked like a bedbug and that they could put me in a different room for my last few hours of sleep before we headed out. I questioned MY STUFF being in the room and whether or not I should leave it and come back for it in the morning- firstly for selfish reasons, it was 2 am and packing it up and hauling it out seemed daunting and secondly, because it was potentially CONTAMINATED and bringing that into another room seemed questionable. They agreed it was best that I left it there. The other thing I commented on was not being sure if I’d be able to wake my husband and convince him to move. I know my husband, and he sleeps deeply and can be somewhat unreasonable if woken up in the middle of the night (I’m almost sure if the place was on fire I could get him up). At this point, they did not tell me that if he stayed or we left our stuff, they would have to charge us for the second room. As I expected, he grunted the first time I told him what was going on and as I explained to him again what I had found and that I was moving to another room, he mumbled something about being in the bed for 1.5 nights already and not being bit (like I said, unreasonable- almost to the point of insanity). (Sidenote: the next morning when I returned to get him and our things, he was shocked and freaked out I left him in the room and didn’t remember any of our "conversation"). I went to return the keys to the front desk, ask them for advice on what we should do (high heat laundering they said- wishing I would have known or thought to ask them for some large plastic bags) and to make sure they contact me once they completed their inspection of the room (still hoping). I spoke w/ the manger Amber. She seemed to take issue with the fact that we left our stuff and that my husband ended up staying behind. She stated that she wasn’t sure if she’d be able to offer me a refund because of this. I had never asked for a refund or for anything else. At the time I was just happy that they offered me another room to get some sleep in, since what I found was on my bed and I knew there was no way I could crawl back in there and because neither of us had appeared to have been bitten the night before (sidenote: my research since this incident shows that 20-30% people bitten by bedbugs have zero reaction, no bite marks, no itching, don’t even know they’ve been bitten), I didn't quite grasp the seriousness of the situation. In the back of mind, I’m thinking about our stuff and what to do and freaking out a- literally thousands of dollars worth of stuff that cannot go through the wash) that I’m going to have to FIGURE OUT HOW TO TREAT, and my Escape after we haul all this stuff home), but bedbugs are a risk whenever anyone sleeps in a hotel. I do my due diligence by checking the bed (which I now know is not sufficient). I know more about bedbugs now, it can take several weeks for 1 to turn into an infestation. I believe the one I flushed was a female- had she LAID EGGS, I don’t know. I am realistic, hotels can’t control a guest bringing bugs in with them. If a hotel knows there’s an issue and still rents the room, or doesn’t perform the inspections they should before renting it, that’s a different story (is Cadillac renting room 122 right now, how about 226?). However, I also believe that if someone ends up incurring significant damages as a result of a stay at a hotel, the hotel is ultimately the responsible party. Hotel groups like IHG are in a much better financial position to cover these costs than the average guest. WHERE MY ISSUE TURNS FROM HORROR TO RAGE is when I get a voicemail from Amber while we’re skiing approx. 6 hours after we check out stating that they’ve inspected the room and found no signs of bedbugs- whew I guess, but I found 1, maybe it was a lone ranger, maybe there were a few more that made their way into our stuff, maybe there were some in the room but not enough yet to be found in whatever kind of inspection was performed, I don’t know. The message then proceeds to tell me that she had SPOKEN with Julie THE OWNER AND WOULD BE CHARGING ME FOR THE OTHER ROOM they sent me to. Was she kidding me?! I called back after we finished skiing but she was gone for the day and wouldn’t be back for 3 days and there was no one else who could help me. They did confirm I had already been charged for the second room. I contacted corporate Holiday Inn once I returned home and they opened a case for me, but said it would be up to the hotel to get back to me w/ resolution w/in 48hrs; IHG CORPORATE GUEST RELATIONS confirmed this is NOTHING THAT THEY WILL HELP RESOLVE. I sent the photo to Terminix and they confirmed that “yes it does look like a bedbug”. We did leave everything in my car and stripped down outside before entering our house (12 degrees, fun), the next day I moved everything one tote at a time around the house (in 8 in of snow w/o my snow boots because they’re in quarantine) to our screened porch thinking the cold could kill any bugs on anything (sadly, my research now shows that even the 2-14 degrees we’re supposed to have these last/next couple days isn’t enough to kill these things, takes 80 hrs at 0 and even then they’ve been known to survive). We’re supposed to leave again this Friday for a week skiing in the UP (5 nights out of 9 scheduled to be at HI’s- I have cancelled these and re-booked at other hotels). I’ve been PAINSTAKINGLY pulling everything out 1 item at a time, placing it in a bag and moving it to my bathtub to visually inspect it and heat it w/ my hairdryer (which I’ve found reaches 195 degrees based on blowing it on a meat thermometer which Cornell research resources on the internet say will kill both bugs and eggs immediately, fingers crossed)- this process is slow and is going to take me the rest of my freetime this week to complete. And I still don't trust leaving the stuff in my house, so I'm packing it up and storing it the garage. I also have an appointment to get my car detailed on Thursday. Am I overreacting, I don’t know, I don’t think so. From what I've read, if you bring these things home, they can be a NIGHTMARE and very costly to get rid of. I go to bed at night and feel crawling and itching- I tell myself it’s just in my head. I popped up last night, threw on the lights and the covers back just to check, nothing. So...BEWARE of room 122 at THIS HOTEL (and maybe 226 which is where they moved me). And honestly, the owner is just a terrible, UNCONSCIONABLE person, you may want to consider staying someplace else based on this alone. Thanks for reading and wish me luck! I have registered the bedbug encounter on The Bedbug Registry, have reported the incident to the health department and have filed a complaint with the BBB. I have also made sure that I've left this review at multiple sources so that anyone looking at staying at this hotel might be made aware.

We are a fairly well traveled couple and we were traveling with our parents. This was perhaps the worst service and experience we have every had at a Hampton Inn. It started at check-in, where it was clear we were a burden to the person checking us in. It appears we were interrupting their 'me' time. At check in, we requested some additional pillow and towel, which was met with a bit of attitude. Two hours later, we went down to the front desk to check and ask again, also met with some attitude, but begrudgingly agreeing to follow. As we left for dinner, a couple hours later, we again made the request, and clearly this was an imposition. Upon returning to dinner, and not finding any of the requests fulfilled, we called the front desk. The clerk was rude and curt - telling us that she was unable to provide those things. We said we would be happy to come to the desk and pick them up (again...) to which she replied that she was unable to retrieve them because she was the only person present and then hung up on us. Sometime after midnight, there was a ruckus in the hallway adjacent to our parents room that went on for almost an hour...and then started again around 2am. Our parents called the front desk multiple times with no answer. We interacted with 4 people in total related to the front desk, all of whom were less than helpful and gave us the impression we were an imposition. Separate from that, the room was a little musty and the bathroom was disgusting. It was cleaned, but there were stains and other remnants of a long-term lack of care. The only redeeming quality was the nice breakfast attendant lady, whom was very efficient and friendly.

It was raining on Wednesday, February 16 and it was supposed to freeze at night so I wanted to get up close to Caberfae and meet my buddy was coming from New England. We skied Caberfae the next day and it was a good move doing the traveling in the rain. The room was perfectly fine too nice queen bedsA very good clear TV a nice gentleman who checked me in and for $67 plus tax senior rate it was a very good deal. The room was clean it had insurance around the back where he put us which was nice and quiet and you cannot hear the highway at all. Breakfast but adequate. I would stay again in a heartbeat we’re comfortable

The MacKenzie Lodge is located at Caberfae Peaks Ski & Golf Resort and is surrounded by the Manistee National Forest. The lodge offers a 36 room hotel located right at the base of the slopes. The lodge is also conveniently located next to the 9 hole golf course and banquet facility. The MacKenzie Lodge offers an outdoor pool and hot tub.
No elevator and no ground floor rooms at this “resort”. Needed to share the balcony. No coffee makers in the rooms. Restaurant and food not available. Pop tarts were the complimentary breakfast. Redeeming factor was the hot tub!!

Pleasant family owned hotel. Located close to beach and park.
This place is the worst Motel I have ever stayed at. First of all the motel was more like a homeless camp than a tourist motel. The residents were all sitting outside their rooms smoking, drinking beer and grilling hot dogs. Inside the room was smelly, dirty with no ventilation as the 2 windows don't open. It appears that no maintenance is ever done to the rooms or property. We arrived at the property around 9pm after traveling all day. What a disappointment !!! We should have slept in the car.

Our stay here was wonderful! This is a great alternative to a cookie-cutter hotel, with every possible convenience prepared and ready in this immaculate cabin. We arrived on a cold, rainy night and my wife was so happy to sit in the lounger by the gas fireplace and turn on the tv. You won’t go wrong!
