Shangri-La Hotel, Beihai, the only 5-star deluxe hotel in the city, brings a new level of luxury to this charming seaside destination, best known for its natural pearls and beautiful beaches. It is conveniently located in Beihai City and close to the beautiful Silver Beach. All its rooms are delightfully decorated and offer an array of comforts and amenities. The Hotel also features a business center, dining and entertainment, as well as a fully-equipped fitness center and an outdoor pool overlooking the South China Sea.
The rooms were well stocked the the hotel restaurants were very good. I recommend trying the fresh passion fruit. The only thing was that to swim, you had to wear a swimming cap. The hotel provides them, but it was interesting to be asked by the lifeguard to put one on.

This is pretty close to a five star review, but not quite… Good new hotel just up from the Silver Beach in Beihai. Silver Beach is a legitimate pretty nice sand beach with nice out of water areas, gradual decline, and water sports and activities - about what you’d expect for a beach in many other countries, but something that can’t be taken for granted always in China. However the beach is undergoing an expansion project / renovation of countless facilities, so access right now (as of Sept. 2021) is limited - you can either somewhat sketchily cut through mostly but not fully fenced construction, or walk down at least a couple blocks to an official entrance. As the leading international hotel near the beach, the Crowne Plaza has a unique position - and appears to charge for it (solid looking premium design Chinese guest houses 民俗 were 50-66% the price). The room however (upgraded as a Platinum IHG member based on US credit cards) was quite nice - well furnished, clean, solid bathroom with good amenities, a nice chair and ledge area overlooking the beach with a good view - couldn’t have asked for anything more. Breakfast was quite good too for a hotel of this grade - would be fine comparing it to the usually slight more premium Marriott/Intercontinental/Sheraton/Hilton sort of tier. Especially helpful with coffee service, which you definitely can’t count on. Also wanted to make sure I tried all the local specialties… Nice small pool area outside, and lobby bar as well. What holds this hotel back a little bit for me: - There is relatively limited within walking distance of this hotel - a countless number of unexceptional seafood places, beach supplies shops, and a McDonalds….but the more attractive areas of Beihai, even areas just off the beach with more of the 民俗 are further away. Getting to the more interesting areas - Qiaogang with more seafood and some Vietnamese places (~5 km), and Zhuhai Street / Old Town (~10 km) require taxis. - We had a bit of a less than optimal experience getting in to the room…after check-in and being given our keys, they were able to operate the elevator with the right floor but didn’t open the room. We used the public phone in the landing to call down….and instead of sending someone straight up the front desk actually called that phone again 5 minutes later to re-verify our identities (but wouldn’t accept my wife’s info…insisted on mine as the first guest on the record, despite seeing both of our ideas 8 minutes later). They then brought up only one card, said “oh” when we couldn’t get in, and didn’t seem to have any interest in apologizing for our inconvenience. It happens of course some % of the time at hotels….but can’t remember the last time a hotel made it so difficult to remedy their mistake… - Also, and this sadly isn’t uncommon with IHG hotels in China, but they are clearly playing games with IHG Rewards availability - not making base rooms available despite relatively low overall rates / identical rooms being available on cash.

The room was enormous. The bathroom had a deep soaker tub and music was piped in through speakers in the ceiling. There was a nice lounger next to the window that overlooked the gulf. Breakfast was fantastic and had a variety of different foods available.

The hotel itself is large with many amenities. There is plenty of employees around but, seems like a lot of inexperience with general requests. For example, took around 20' to order a cappuccino in the lobby. Food was okay, rooms are okay, location is very nice for the area. Elevators are slow.

Location not convenient unless you only want to walk up and down the old street full of tourist shops. Far from the beach so you have to get a taxi every time (about 50 yuan one way, if you are over 4 people you have to take 2 taxi) Swimmingpool is not clean, surounding is dirty and old needs a renovation instantly. Rooms are ok but the beds are extremely hard. No seaview (well maybe 5 rooms do) while there are hotel buildings blocking the view. Breakfast all chinese accept some toast, egg and fruit. You can use the washing machine which is convenient. The hotel could be much nicer if they renovate the pool and restaurants and some bathrooms. Most of the restaurants around have no airco (you will love that when it is 36 degrees and humid) and serve mainly fish. Fish smell on the street in this area is very strong. From all the Chinese area's I've visited (over 30) this area is the most dirty one. At the beach renting a table with 4 chairs cost you 200 yuan. Expensive city however it looks quite poor and dirty around. Not much to see, the old street is ok for a visit but once youve seen it not worth visiting again. Overall not much Chinese history or beauty. Not much to do for children around. I've seen many great places in China but this is not 1 of them. It was a Bummer.

Well, actually this is a pretty good hotel for the money. If you are a five star person, go to the Shang! We got nailed with a typhoon and were lucky to get some beach time for half a day, who's sand is nice, water is turgid and unfortunately unsafe/prohibited to sea swimmers like me ! :-) The downside was upon arrival late that evening, we were put into a garden view room with twin beds when I requested a king for my wife and after a bit of unfortunate pushing,I got upgraded to a floor which smelled as if it had been aired out and occupied, as opposed to the aforementioned two rooms and floors, which smelled dusty. Their second room attempt had some giant air con system on the balcony.....sigh I would come back as it is quiet, the staff are friendly, the hotel is clean and the beach is very nice

This is a typical Chinese hotel that has ideas well above its station, and thinks that all you need to be an international standard is to add the word international to your name. The reception. Not too bad. The staff and polite and helpful, but speak very little English. There is no bar or night time recreational areas or entertainment. The room is rather average. Cleanliness was OK, but not great. The bed is only slightly more comfy that the floor. A good size, but rock hard. Typical Chinese style, so I do mean rock hard !! The rest of the furnishings are OK, if a little basic. There wasn't a comfy sofa, just fairly hard chairs. The bathroom was definitely sub-standard. No bath, just a small shower. The soap and shampoo are in dispensers screwed to the wall. One was empty. Couldn't tell which one as the labels were only in Chinese. There was only half a loo roll as well. Given the standard of local food and water, this could have been a problem, but luckily I was only there fore 1 day !! All in all, a rather run down place, very local. Not recommended.
