Wonderful place to stay to explore the Burren and Aran Islands

Reviewed By stephanegroud

Hazelwood Lodge is perfectly located to explore the surrounding area (Burren National Park, Aran Islands -> Doolin is 30mn away by car, Aillwee Caves literally around the corner) but it is not just the location that makes this B&B a great place to stay. Victor and Geraldine are such friendly hosts and have tastefully decorated and maintained their lodge, with clean, spacious rooms and very comfortable beds. The surroundings are green and quiet, and the breakfast is delicious with a large choice of options for all tastes. To top this off, the lodge is 3mn away by car or 15mn walk away from the centre of Ballyaughan and a number of great restaurants. Monks was our go to place and we were treated to a wonderful sunset. Would definitely recommend Hazelwood Lodge and stay there again!

This is a friendly lovely family run place. My room was extra comfortable & the owners were quick to help and answer any questions. It really is a comfortable place and despite being on a road into the village it was quiet and i would know. It was an easy walk to the local pubs and restaurants. Lots of on site parking. I highly recommend.

Burren Walking Holiday

Room was clean and tidy, well maintained. Nice bar and friendly barstaff. Food was excellent, as good as I've had in some time. As part of a group we were on a restricted menu . We've done this type of tour before and have no hesitation in stating that the dinner menu at the Hylands Hotel far surpassed anything we came across before. Imaginative and tasty, our biggest problem was deciding what to eat!!

Different in a Good Way

Reviewed By Kathy B

The pictures of The Waters Country House can't quite capture just how different and quirky (in a good way) The Waters is. It was great to have rooms, other than one's bedroom, to relax in. The fact that fires were lit and an honour bar added to the atmosphere. However, what I really appreciated was Wolfgang and Maria's willingness to change the booking mistake I'd made. Lovely place, lovely hosts

7 course meal

Reviewed By cdsforl

Had the 7 course taster menu a week ago with 4 adult family members. All dishes were absolutely delicious bar the ray with rouget sauce, which tasted okay but had an effect similar to inhaling ammonia on the nose. None of us could finish it. It was incredibly disconcerting...like being poisoned...a quick google led us to the answer...too much saffron in the rouget sauce (unvelievebly too much saffron can have a chlorinated or ammonia like effect)...it would have been nice if the staff had acknowledged this error but they maintained that some people dont like ray as it has a very strong flavour...absolute rubbish..have had ray many times with no issue...they need to treat their customers with more respect...in the age of google and masterchef errors like this cant be brushed under the carpet with taste bud assertions....hopefully they will educate their table staff better...and maybe the chef on the overuse of saffron too...everything was really smashing.

Owner had double booked

Reviewed By Julio-el-Ingles

My wife phoned and asked for the postcode. When we arrived, the owner tersely told us that we were not staying with her but instead would be staying 'across the road' in Meadowfield B & B (see review). There was no apology and absolutely no regard for our booking choice. We were surprised that the owner had not mentioned this during the phone conversation.

The Burren Atlantic Hotel - A Guide

Reviewed By Anthony M

"The Burren Atlantic Hotel - A Guide" We arrived to an empty reception with a phone number to call. A man answered the phone. He seemed surprised to be honest, as though he expected us to let ourselves in. He arrived about 15 mins later and duly checked us in. He gave us instructions about the heating that I have yet to decipher but he informed me I'd figure it out. The house was a little smelly but I'd get over that. There were one or two dead flies on the bed but again it could be forgiven. However, the bed sheets were dirty and this was a little disappointing. They were stained and had one or two questionable curly hairs on them too. The fireplace didn't seem to work which again really dampened the experience. The shower also had serious issues as it seamlessly switched between scalding hot and freezing cold with no encouragement. Things began to look up though when the flies came back to life. Or rather their friends joined us. In their droves. Any I opened a window or moved a curtain, the fly population in the house would multiply. The truth of it all is, this facility has loads of potential but it appears to be managed by this one man who is only interested in taking your money. When we checked out and went to drop our key off at reception, the door was locked and by good luck I still had his number to call him. He told me generally we just leave the key in the flat! Again no interest in the customers experience. That's pretty much it, except that I forgot to mention they didn't even supply toilet roll. An absolute joke of a place. Please please stay somewhere else.
