The historical center of Baku reveals its tumultuous past, from its roots as a Silk Road port city, through its oil boom to its Soviet period. The old city is a maze of alleys, mosques, historic buildings and remnants of fortification, including the Palace of the Shirvanshahs and the Maiden Tower, now listed among UNESCO's World Heritage Sites. Much more than a historic site, the city hosts vibrant arts and cultural activities, as well as a bustling modern business sector.

The Merchant is situated in the magnificent building that once housed the Caspian Shipping Company. Built in 1858, the iconic architecture reflects one of the most dynamic and important periods of Azerbaijani history. The opulent building of The Merchant Hotel stands in the heart of what was once Baku’s trading and commercial center. Located in former Olginskaya Street, named after Grand Duchess
I was undecided about booking a major brand hotel that I usually stay at or The Merchant Baku during our vacation to Azerbaijan. I finally decided upon The Merchant Baku. Wow, what a great decision. This hotel has everything. The main thing is Location-Location-Location! You step out the door and all the restaurants and shopping are right there. You are also steps away from the Caspian Sea and the Old City. The staff is always there with smiles and willing to help. Hats off to Jafar for setting up our sides trips and to Ali and Ramadan in the dining room. Everyone was great. The rooms are spacious, comfortable, and clean. Staying at The Merchant Baku was a great decision.

The hotel is great! It has nice amentias, good food and very friendly / helpful staff. The beds are also super comfortable. We managed to book on-site and even extend our stay, despite the Formula One making things super busy. The staff are super friendly and incredibly hospitable. We were lucky enough to get a room upgrade and some complimentary items. I've stayed in many hotels and have to say that this is one of the best.
