Magical visit

Reviewed By 890colink

Have just come back from a second visit to the wonderful hotel Hintlesham Hall. It was exactly a year since we'd visited and like before the weather was hot and sunny. It's a handsome hotel steeped in history. The grounds are beautiful. Lovely walks including a deer trail. Sally is the wonderful gardener in charge of it all. She's there with a friendly welcome and her husband Graham is the manager. He works in every department managing as well as mucking in with everyone. We sat in the garden enjoying a bottle of chilled white wine. Very nice friendly service from Matt. We found out that the hotel has shortages of staff in all departments but you would never know. It runs like clockwork. Our room was at the top of the main house oak beams and uneven flooring and very clean. Evening meal was superb the lamb and my steak delicious. Matt again looked after the whole restaurant alone with superb service. Breakfast was delicious. We loved our stay. Special thanks to Shannon who helped me over the telephone get the best price for our stay. She went above and beyond. The whole staff are fabulous. It's a special place to stay.

Afternoon tea for two

Reviewed By Liz V

We had booked a lunchtime slot for our afternoon tea, we were asked to choose our own table, which was better than being shown to one and then thinking I would have preferred to sit over there ! The pot of tea was refilled as many times as you liked, the sandwiches, 4 each, were very tasty, the fruit scones were huge and 4 little cakes each to finish off. As we couldn’t eat all our cakes we were provided with a ‘takeaway’ box so we could eat them later. All the staff were polite and friendly. All in all a very pleasant time in very pleasant surroundings. We parked in the car park across from the hotel, registered the car at reception allowing us to stay as long as we needed. After our tea we then walked into the town centre and had a lovely afternoon wandering about. Sudbury is such a lovely place.

Room

Reviewed By shellycatherine

We stayed here around a month ago. We paid £285 for a room & Breakfast. This was a very special treat for us for my Birthday, as we would never spend this sort of money on a room. Our room had stains on the carpet, marks on the walls & the Bathroom tiles needed re-grouting as were black. We took pictures & sent them to the Hotel. We sent many Emails with no reply, then the Manger called & left me a message saying you would call back the next day. Never heard from him since. Another Email sent, just being ignored. Will be sticking to our Premier Inns much better value! The staff were lovely & the food in the Gallery was lovely. Breakfast is small but with the toast it is plenty.

Drab and dingy hotel

Reviewed By Michael B

We stayed in luxury room 1. It was large with a view of the green. The bed was comfortable. However, we found the room drab and dingy and needed freshening up. As soon as we walked in we noticed the carpet was ruffled and needed relaying or replaced. There were rows of carafes on shelves which was a strange decoration. I can't imagine they were for drinking out of because they had not been cleaned for ages and you could draw pictures on the dust on them. The bathroom door did not lock, nor did it close properly. It had a wobbly door knob. A dirty toilet brush was clearly visible. The breakfast was quite good. The staff were friendly and helpful. For what we paid, this was disappointing value. The management need to pay more attention to the small details.

We stayed in the Old Stables in two very comfortable rooms. A warm welcome from the host, Frank. Had a swim in the lovely heated outdoor pool - a real treat after a day’s travel. On Frank’s recommendation we are at Lavenham Greyhound - really nice selection of tapas and great service. After a lovely breakfast, superbly cooked by Dawn, we headed off on our next adventure. Can’t speak highly enough of this lovely house and accommodation.

Curates egg- good in parts

Reviewed By Jonathan E

We rented a lodge for a family get together for a week. The lodges were a delight on the most part. Nice modern open rooms - bit light in some equipment. Not really set for cooking for six - small pans. No way of making a cooked breakfast for six. Perhaps I expect too much. Biggest disappointment was an evening meal in the stark, lacking in character, golf clubhouse restaurant. It took 30 minutes to take our food order. Was maybe an hour from arriving that we saw food. A foccacia with balsamic and oil served moments before our starters. The menu was overdescribed and under delivered. Ingredients put together to no good effect. Worst of my meal was probably the haddock with rarebit topping - the poor fish has died ingloriously. So overcooked and over whelmed by an overly strong sauce. Chef - taste your food! If claiming to be fine dining then make it fine dining. At £50 per head including modest drinks it was poor value for money. Although having said that the wine list was reasonably priced and I would happily recommend their Picpoul de Pinet. Overall it was underwhelming.

If you want a proper, modern hotel then this isn't for you. If you want to be invited into a good friend's home where they haven't quite tidied up but will welcome you with fantastic hospitality, small but comfy rooms and a great breakfast then this place is a gem. Main building is 11C and the 'modern' bit is 14C. All old beams. Lavenham village nearby looks like a Tudor film set. Traffic can be a little noisy as it's right on the A134 but didn't bother us at all.
