Off Australia’s South Coast you’ll find the rugged and beautiful island of
Tasmania — a unique destination where you can see Tasmanian devils, walk
in the wilderness, take in stunning eco-cruises, taste artisanal cheeses and
even explore a controversial art museum. The best way to see it? Take the
back roads, but allow plenty of time: A short drive in any direction can lead to
wineries, distilleries, marine farms, convict settlements, pristine beaches,
fields of lavender and national parks…

Located centrally in Hobart, the hostel is opposite the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, one block from the Harbour and a 10-minute walk from . The staff hail from all over the world and are happy to share their advice on the best way to see the island.
Hobart YHA We stayed in a family room. The room was basic and that was fine for a night when all the other accommodation was triple their cost. The room was basic but clean with its own bathroom and heater and TV. The front desk staff were really friendly, and the bag storage was really helpful as we had an early check in. The location is great only a short walk to the harbour and city centre.

Pod Inn is the first capsule accommodation in Tasmania. Pod Inn has a mission that is to achieve hotel standard service while maintaining affordable prices. The common area has plenty of power sockets for your electronics. Plenty of seating available in the area, whether you like a hard stool or a soft sofa. A kitchenette next to the common area where you can make yourself a cuppa. Each male and female toilet has its own shower and toilet cubicles. We also provide powder room for ladies to get themselves ready for the adventure of the day. Laundry is also made available to our guests. Your sleep is our first priority. Each of the Capsule beds of your choice has their own privacy blind or door. We provide comfortable mattress, pillow, and good quality quilt for you during your stay. Each of Capsule bed is fitted with hotel room essentials such as, reading lights, mirror, wall lights, USB charging ports and fan ventilation
The Inn is accessed via a gate which leads to the reception. Bookings are simple, the swipe access card was supplied on arrival followed by a brief tour of the Inn. Pods are made from a thick plastic not dissimilar to the road barriers used in road works. You are supplied with a locker that can fit a large suitcase inside. Bathroom, kitchen and toilet are shared with other visitors and are reasonable. Unfortunately during our stay there was a drunk male that was swearing on the phone and had on display his "recreational" smoking material. I woke up several times to the male coughing from 5am onwards. The Pods are NOT very sound proof and can get pretty hot inside as the only ventilation you can get is two smalls fans located at the top of the Pod. Lighting in the Pod is highly customisible and the bedding supplied is comfortable. Overall, if the male wasn't staying at the Inn, the experience would have been pretty good.

An 1888 heritage listed building with renovated bathrooms and fantastic staff makes this international backpacker hostel a wonderful place to stay. Situated in the 'arts district', the Queen Victoria Museum & Art Gallery is only a stroll away, yet the city centre is only a short 7 minute walk.
Stayed here for a few nights in a mixed dorm. The place had good vibes, friendly staff and plenty of chatty and friendly people. It’s also very cheap as well. The drawback was that the facilities were very grimy and in disrepair. The kitchen and bathrooms were especially bad. The kitchen had grease dripping down the walls, chunks broken off the walls, a hole in the roof above the stoves and was absolutely filthy. Many of the showers were out of order (had to try 3 different showers before I found one that worked, wasn’t just a dribble and the taps hadn’t fallen off!!) but even the one working shower I found was mouldy, the laminated side wall had peeled off and there was hair everywhere. It’s a cheap hostel so I guess you get what you pay for!

Launceston Backpackers is a one hundred year old Victorian building. It has 30 rooms, including double ensuite, doubles, singles, triples and dormitory rooms. It has a large commercial kitchen, large TV room and separate dining room. There is a free car park. Launceston Backpackers has a modern fire protection system.
The man who checked us in was nice. That was the highlight of this place. It’s a large hostel, and somewhat impersonal. There is a large industrial type kitchen. The shared female bathroom had very low lighting. Most concerningly, two times a man (assuming he was staying in a nearby too ) managed to unlock our door by accident - once at night when we were all in bed with the lights off, and once the next morning. The hostel was comfortable enough for the price, but the ability to access other rooms is worrying.

Montacute Boutique Bunkhouse is a multi-awarding winning boutique hostel in Hobart's historic village of Battery Point. Montacute is just 5 minutes walk from all of the restaurants, bars, pubs, cafes and galleries of Hobart's famous Salamanca waterfront precinct.
I felt very uncomfortable being approached inappropriately. He touched my waist and said he thought my outfit was “cute” and commented on the way I looked multiple times. Also he tugged on a little girl's PJ shorts while she was alone and also calling them “cute”. Anthony also had a hot temper. I heard him yelling very loudly and publicly to someone over the phone, using vulgar and obnoxious language. I was humiliated and publicly dismissed from the property for swapping from the top bunk to the bottom bunk of the 4 bed dormitory (which, at the time, was only occupied by one other guest). Antony confronted and berated me in the kitchen, in front of the other guests, accusing me of being “entitled”. This was at 8 pm at night, and I was traveling alone. I was so intimidated & confused. He continued to make me feel as unwelcome as possible; sarcastically telling a new guest that if she ever wanted anything all she had to do was ask because asking “will get you far”, knowing I was in ear shot. I tried to get a refund through Agoda as I only stayed 2 of the 7 nights of my stay but he refused under the grounds of his “cancelation policy”. They called him to mediate the situation and he once again refused to give a refund. When pressed for the reason why, he said “I don’t know” and hung up. Now that’s what I call entitled. There are other 1 star reviews that attest to his hostile and erratic behaviour. I would NEVER recommend to stay in Montacute Bunkhouse to ANYBODY.

Superb Place to be. Staff is extremely helpful and often go the extra mile to help you. Good amenities and a welcoming lounge where everyone can socialize. Very Close the city centre (2min) and value for money for the location and services. Clean rooms and bathrooms. Huge kitchen so we don't have to queue and wait. Separate bbq station and entertainment area. Ping pong, Movie room, pool table. Secure Parking too. They also give free tours to Mt Wellington :)

An old style pub. Quaint with no TVs or pokies. There's a reasonable sized outdoor seating area, with covered smoking area and uncovered courtyard. A bit concerning on cleanliness, given the large number of small flies around the bar area. They had a reasonably good whisky selection, but unfortunately no menu (electronic or otherwise) and the staff member wasn't very knowledgeable to assist in selecting. At $12.50 for a pint of a pretty standard pale ale it’s on the pricier end.

My husband, two adult children & I stayed for one night in room 9 of the Penitentiary. You have to bring all sleeping gear, lights, food, plates, cutlery and water (there is no electricity in the rooms), but it was so worth it. I chose to pack cheese, kabana, crackers and knibblies for dinner, and fruit buns & juice for breakfast. I didn't want to bother packing pans and cooking utensils just so we could use the cooking facilities in mess hall. The toilets were a short walk from the rooms, and were clean and modern. We all enjoyed the walks to Fossil Cliffs and Painted Cliffs, with lots of wild life to see along the way. But the best part and the main reason we went to Maria Island, was for the wombats. They are absolutely magnificent! Could never get tired of watching them waddle around. Highly recommend a visit to Maria Island.

Bluegum Hostel in Eaglehawk Neck is a small, budget hostel close to Port Arthur, 3 Capes walks, seacliffs cruises, diving, and surf beach. We have 1 double room and 1 mixed bunkroom with 4 bunks. Kitchen, Lounge and Bathroom are shared.
The property is accessed by a turn-off just before Eaglehawk Neck, with a small section of unsealed road towards the end. The hostel is situated behind the owners house and fully self equipped with a kitchen, bathroom, dinning table, and sofa with tv. There are electric blankets under every bed and the a air-con heater for the communal area. Laundry is not available in the hostel but can be found at Port Arthur. It was a shame that a hitchhiker told us she thought Bluegum wasn’t running so she booked somewhere else. My friend and I really enjoyed our two-night-stay, falling asleep away from the sounds of the city, and waking up to see birds jumping in the back of the house, chickens patrolling the ground. Owner is lovely and gave us a bunch of very helpful tips around the peninsula. This is definitely one of the best budget accommodation I have stayed in before!

The Baehr family are amazing! They were very welcoming. I had such an amazing stay here. The rooms are clean and cozy and the beds were very comfortable.
