We are from Bell Tower and Drum Tower and subway station 850 meters, hidden in the thousand year old lane, whispering sound every day listening to the temple worship, the surrounding is authentic Shaanxi Food tea music, reading, enjoy life. We do not have the luxury of facilities, not every rhythm process, does not require cumbersome, we have a sincere heart, one for you to stay late into the night in the street, a group of lovely friends, That's it.
Alley Youth Hostel is well known among Travelers from Malaysia. My wife and I stayed in Alley Youth Hostel for 4 nights. My first impression of this hostel was almost similar to other budget hostel. My wife really surprised when we found that the room was so spacious, bed was as good as a five star hotel bed. Really superb. All amenities were available. We enjoyed watching Cable TV for the first night. Almost every staff at Alley Youth Hostel could communicate in English especially Steven. Steven he himself waiting for our arrival at the airport as our flight arrived at mid-night. Alley Youth Hostel is conveniently located in the Muslim Quarters whereby we enjoyed Halal Food. We visited almost all parts of Muslim Quarters especially the Grand Mosque and the nearby Bell Tower, Drum Tower and City Wall. We had an opportunity visiting the popular Terracotta Worrier with Steven. Our 4 nights stay was not enough. We will come again to visit Xi'an and definitely will stay at Alley Youth Hostel. This time with bigger group.

Stayed 2 nights at the tatami room and 1 night at the private double room. Both were big and clean and offered great value. With the tatami room you should know though that you will be sharing the only bathroom on your floor which is also the only "public" western toilet with many other people, because all the chinese guests will be constantly using it for hand-washing their laundry. With the private double room you get your own western toilet and shower for the same price. The hostel ist mainly used by chinese students which makes it a very authentic experience, you will most likely be the only western guest. The location is close to the sights in xi'an and also xi'an station can be easily reached ( you will need this to go to terracotta army and huashan). Furthermore the famous muslim quarter is literally at the hostels front door.(don't forget under any circumstances to try the food at the stands right in front of the hostel!). The staff there speaks sufficient english for any enquiry while it's understandably not perfect. But they are so incredibly helpful like I have never seen anywhere else. Two anecdotes to explain: 1. We didn't manage to book a train ticket at the train station so we asked the guy at the reception if we could do it there. We only afterwards realised that they didn't actually do that normally like we had assumed. Nevertheless he immediately got out his laptop and booked a ticket for us paying with his private credit card. He than refused any kind of commission or tip. He even suggested to send his colleague back to the train station with us to buy the ticket there because that would have made it 20 yuan cheaper! 2. As mentioned before we changed the room after the second night because we had booked accordingly. But we had forgotten about that, so we went to see the terracotta army and missed our check out time for the old room by about 4 hours. What would have been a big problem anywhere else probably resulting in having to pay both rooms wasn't any problem for them. They just reminded us to change the room and that was it.

We did a two nighter here. Right opposite the city wall on the Inside. Close walk to the wall entrance down the road, near the subway and bus station. The manager was very helpful and took us to the Chinese restaurant next door to assist us with ordering. To get to the Terracotta Warriors we took the bus to the main train station then caught the tourist bus. All up about 90 minutes and 40 yuan.

When we arrived at the hostel it was immediately obvious that only one spoke decent English, which wasn't a big issue normally, however the number of problems we had made it quite a problem! I chose the Hanwood over another hostel as it offered free pick-up from the train station, which would've saved us a 20rmb taxi journey and the hassle of getting a taxi and having to barter too, however they failed to pick us up! I'd informed them of my train times etc. and where to meet but after waiting 45mins longer than our meeting time and getting a taxi to the hostel, the staff were still sat there with my name written down on a piece of card ...not a great start! There was no electricty when I arrived, which was fine, however there was also no kitchen area or communal area, which meant we couldn't cook food, and thus made for another annoyance as the ad I booked through clearly advertised this as a big plus against other hostels. We received power about an hour or two later and were able to have showers (the showers in our room were amazing but it took about 5mins of running the water for it to warm up!!), whilst we found a lovely noodle restaurant behind the hostel where a young couple served us tomato egg noodles for 6rmb each. The room itself was definitely the room I'd seen on the well known hotel booking website, however this room had experienced 10years of hospitality since the photographs were taken - they were extremely gloomy and dainty, the plaster was falling off the walls and all over the floor, and the place was generally worn down. It wasn't filthy or anything, just not what we booked!! The window was also terrible and did not block noise from the street. The bathroom was clearly modern and absolutely top notch - amongst the best we experienced in China! Anoter thing thas irked me was that I'd asked for the bin to be emptied in our room on the third day, as well as replacing the toilet roll, to which the girl agreed, however when we came home after being out all day, the room was not touched, therefore I had to take the rubbish down myself and ask for toilet roll by bringing up a picture on my phone. It really felt like every small thing had to be escalated into a bigger issue before they did anything about it!! The halls were covered in graffitti, which was amusing as a lot of it was detailing issues previous travellers had when staying here, so they really need to address that. For the meantime though, if you do stay, it's worth reading what's written outside your room... The wifi in the room also did not work well, and we had to go downstairs to connect to any of our 3 devices, despite the staff being 100% sure it worked throughout the building until we took them to our room & they tried to use the wifi on their own devices. Oops! The hostel is really well located for the pagoda and watershow, and has Pizza Hut, Ganges Indian Restaurant, Subway, and various other restaurants and bars around. It's also right beside the bus stop (catch no 5 or 30 for 2rmb each), which goes directly through town and to the train station, as well as passing the Long Hai Hotel where you can get a much cheaper bus to the airport, which I also reviewed seperately (see my reviews). Probably my biggest gripe about the place was the price they tried to charge us to go to the Terracotta Warriors - 250rmb per person just seemed extortionate from a backpacker hostel so we did it ourselves via public transport for about 110rmb each (which you can read about if you click my profile and see my Terracotta Warrior review). They tried to tell us it wasn't possible by public transport but it most certainly was, and was quite straightforward too. Overall, the staff tried to do there bit but they could speak very little English & our lack of Chinese and the amount of issues with the hostel made for an unpleasant stay. I doubt I'll be in Xian again but if I am then I'll book elsewhere...

This was overall a nice place to stay. The staff are very friendly, and speak ok English. The shower was really bad, but I made do. The beds are very big, but the rooms are small and cold. Everyone gets their own large locker, which was great. Good location in the middle of the city about a 5 min walk from the centre Bell tower, but somewhat difficult to find at first. The laneway adjacent has delicious food. Great place for single lone travelers.

This is a good little hostel in a convinient location in Xi'an ie right next to the south gate of the city walls. There is a great little kitchen/lounge area where you can chill out on sofas and use the free wifi and computers. They don't sell food or drinks but this is fine as there are supermarkets nearby and of course like everywhere in China there is 24 hour hot drinking water available in the hostel so we tend to always have tea and noodle pots. Staff were always helpful when I asked for information although as is so common in China they do panic slightly when you speak english to them. The english of the staff was ok but I felt I could only really converse in basic phrases. Rooms are spacious and very clean. The communal courtyard is lovely and a real oasis of calm in what is a very busy city (traffic is monstrous!!). Some reviews i read complained about the noise of the nearby bars. We were there on a Friday night when you'd expect the bars to be busy but didn't really hear anything - nothing that gave us a problem anyway. It's a good place to stay and they have good directions from the railway station to help with your arrival. We'd stay again if ever in Xian again.

We booked two tatamirooms (with bathroom) using Agoda.com. Unfortunately it seemed that this booking went wrong. When we arrived we understood that the system of the hotel didn't communicate with Agoda in the weekend (we booked on Saterdaymorning for that night and sundaynight). So the rooms we booked weren't available. They offered us a sollution by giving us a room on the roof and two beds in the dorms for one night. The next night we should get the booked rooms. Unfortunately (again) the next day - when we arrived back around 10 P.M. after visiting the Terracotta Army - we understood that again the tatamirooms were not available. This was solved (luckily) and in the end we received one of the rooms we booked. The hostel itself is a great place. I loved the place. But the organisation/communication with Agoda doesn't seem to work well.
