Maybe a good Hostel but a poor Hotel

Reviewed By JoanaBraz

SPIS is a hotel/hostel in Kiruna that I can’t recommend. PROS: - SPIS is in the city center of Kiruna near to the best restaurants and bars in town (this could change in the near future since part of the city is being moved); - They offer a good breakfast with a variety of typical scandinavian offerings from cheese and meat to smoked salmon and herring;Inside the hotel has a pretty good restaurant with delicious food; - Also inside, SPIS provides a small deli with awesome cheeses, bread, chocolates among others. - The double bedrooms have a cool vibe and the bed is comfortable. CONS: - This space it’s called ‘SPIS Hotel & Hostel’ and maybe it could be a good hostel but is a really poor hotel; - The rooms have terrible soundproofing, it’s possible to hear every single movement and noises of the neighbors; - The rooms layout are incomprehensible. A typical layout would have the bathroom of one room near to the bathroom of the next room. The bathroom of our neighbors was next to our bed, which didn’t had any frame to soundproof a little bit; - SPIS doesn’t provide a phone in the room, if you need something from the reception you have to go down the stairs and ask. This is not a game changer but could be a nice touch; - The hotel doesn't have enough breakfast space to accommodate all its guests. This is critical in any situation but specially when you have hungry guests that have strict schedules to attend. One day after waiting 10/15 min. for a vacay table we asked if the hotel had another room. The lady working that day said that they were full at the moment but we could go to the small commun kitchen 30/40 meters down a corridor. I said no, firstly because the breakfast it’s a buffet so it's a bit ridiculous to walk up and down the corridor to grab food, and I didn’t pay to be in a kitchen eating breakfast. We ended up at the counter of the hotel check in (which by the way is in the same place as the restaurant and breakfast room) eating breakfast because at that point we only had 30 min left to eat. What hotel does that? I understand that SPIS space is limited but the management could implement a schedule breakfast time for each room in order to avoid crows and unpleasant situations; - A lot of times guests had to ask the staff at breakfast to clean vacay tables and to replenish food. We sense a lack of efficiency during this period; - In the middle of Lapland where the temperature can drop to -30 degrees Celsius, this hotel doesn’t provide in the room an electric kettle for do it yourself warm drinks; - SPIS has also a lounge area (which is common to the hotel and the restaurant) where typically they sell an amazing variety of beers and wines but if you arrive during lunch time they will not serve you any alcoholic drinks, bedside water, coffee or tea. Like I stated before SPIS will probably change to the new city center. I believe that they have an unique opportunity to reshape their business model and take in consideration the CONS that their guests stated. I would start with the name. It's confusing! Are we booking a hostel or a hotel? You can't have a hotel with hostel standards, either you have a good hostel or a good hotel and right now you have an awful hotel. But SPIS could change in the near future. I hope it does change!

Nicely decorated, but shared bathrooms!

Booked this hotel based on the great reviews and lovely pictures - finally a hotel that didn’t look like it hadn’t been updated since the 1900-1970’s! The price matched our expectation of the hotel, so imagine our surprise when we found out the bathrooms were shared... they were recently updated and very clean, but we’re not into camping and hostels. The room was indeed nicely decorated, but the building was in desperate need of attention - paint chipping off the windows and old linoleum floors. Breakfast was basic. Would definitely not stay here again, too bad because it looked promising.

Very clean, modern, good value for money

Reviewed By samlesbury1

Stayed here with my husband for three nights. Typically Scandinavian in design. It's a hostel so amenities are basic - you make your own bed, code entry for main door and room door, shared bathrooms. But as long as you understand that you will have a perfectly enjoyable stay like we had. The whole place is very clean. Rooms are compact but comfortable, and very well soundproofed. Well stocked kitchen and vending machine for drinks and snacks. Free coffee and tea is a lovely touch. Ideal location in the centre of Lulea. Decent value for money (nothing is cheap in Sweden!). Would happily stay here again.

This was a very familiar, cosy, and clean place in a private atmosphere with lots of support, what to do in Lulea and in the surrounding. We spent a wonderful time in this hostel and on the frozen ice of the East Sea. We had got a comfortable clean room with WC. TV and Wlan and sauna. And we could stay the whole day long, though it was bed and breakfast. The kitchen was always clean and you could meet interessting travellers. We like to come back.

Avoid this hostel! It s a Covid Trap!

Reviewed By Cylar_2021

Avoid this hostel I got Covid there, I couldn t board my plane now to go back home! The director of this place, an old man with a white ponytail, doesn t care about Covid and allows numerous gatherings of ten or more people in small bedrooms where you can t open the windows all the time with minus 23 degrees celsius! Several people got sick there, and when I mentioned that to him he didn t care at all and he got then nasty with me! Also this place is old, furniture is falling apart, the bedrooms are poorly insulated, no front door or bedroom doors can be locked, there are no locker facilities for your valuables, and the showers are open community showers where everybody, men and women can walk in any time, there are no doors! We are all sick from this place! Avoid this place! This place is a Covid Trap!

Stopp for natten

Reviewed By Peter J

Bodde her en natt på tur sørover Sverige. Billig, rent, greie rom, god parkering. Ligger nært e4 så lett å finne fram til hotellet når man kommer med bil. Perfekt sted når man bare trenger et sted å overnatte når man er på gjennomreise. Blir sikkert å benytte stedet igjen hvis jeg skal samme veien en annen gang.

Thumbs up!

Reviewed By inesarapovic

Had the best stay at Finnmyrten! It is a well kept former school that has been turned in to a hostel/b&b. Some furniture and equipment are kept which brings authenticity and charm to the place. Simple, very clean and spacious rooms. Location is great, just one turn from the main road in Juoksengi and a short walk to the Arctic circle-sign. Location is quiet. Don’t be concerned about baths and kitchen being shared spaces, there are so very clean! As for the host Kalle, the best! In advance he texted us just to make sure we felt settled and that we had everything we felt we needed. He met up with us as soon as we arrived and showed us the factility and to our room. He was just a phone call or text message away our entire stay, always responding quickly. Highly recommend this accommodation and I will most definitely return!

Arctic Guest House, Jokkmokks Vandrarhem

Returning back for another adventure in Lappland I started with staying two nights again at Arctic Guest House, Jokkmokks Vandrarhem. Caisa who is running the place is making you feel so welcome and making your stay very easy to enjoy. The setting is lovely and the hostel and room are of good standard. I had one dinner there this time and Caisa had prepared some lovely dishes with local food, could really recommend it if you get the possibility.

River Motel

Favorite accommodation in Haparanda

Reviewed By Davvebiegga

Spent 1 night in the River Motell & Vandrarhem in March and it wasn't the first time - and hopefully not the last. I had a nice single room with own toilet and shower, which was perfect. I had been staying in other rooms with shared bathroom before, several times, both summer and winter/spring. Contactless check-in was perfect, free wifi worked fine. I didn't use much of the common kitchen this time, but had used it before., it's big and comfortable. The motel/hostel is situated by the river and only a few hundred meters from the bus station at the Finnish border. Train station is also a few hundred meters, in the other direction. Supermarkets within walking distance. Calm in the night.

A wonderful time in an amazing place

Reviewed By AlexDBrussels

I have only given this place a 4 because of the tiredness of the accommodation - but we've been told they are moving next year to a purpose built site across the border in Finland. Everyone is incredibly friendly and helpful, the food is regional and excellent. The safaris were well organised, smoothly run and interesting. Finally, I hope they take the wilderness sauna with them when they move. There really is nothing like a dip in an iced over stream to take the heat off from a wood heated sauna.
